Second UK venue cancels show by US homophobic Trump ally and preacher

A second venue has cancelled a booking by an American evangelical preacher after concerns were raised about his promotion of homophobic views.

Franklin Graham, Donald Trump’s most prominent evangelical ally, had been due to visit Sheffield Arena in June as part of an eight-city tour of the UK. Sheffield City Trust (SCT), which runs the venue, announced on Wednesday that it had cancelled the booking.

The ACC Liverpool had already cancelled an event featuring Graham, saying his views were incompatible with its values. In Glasgow, the board of the Scottish Events Campus was understood to be meeting on Wednesday to consider cancelling an event there.

Graham is also due to appear in Newcastle, Milton Keynes, Cardiff, Birmingham and London.

I'm not a fan of no-platforming, unless the person in question actually calls for violence. If nothing else, it gives his snowflakey followers an excuse to moan about how their views are being censored and targeted.

Plus, I've never heard of this bloke, and I'll probably forget his name by tomorrow morning. But cancelling his shows brings attention to him, and now his views will probably actually reach a wider audience than if he was allowed ro preach to his choir...

i think it's a missed opportunity to tag and track those that would have attended his sermon

That too! Let people show themselves.

I’m sure this will only allow him to ply the victim on Fox News, should have let it happen, it would have only reached the people who think like him anyway and now people who wouldn’t have been aware or interested, know about it, like yeah, him and his views are horrific, but there are millions of him all over the world, we can’t ban everyone

I think if someone owns the platform, it's their right to say who gets to use it if it's privately owned. Evangelical preachers have plenty of platforms to make their millions- I mean, spread their message.

Good. Glad to see Liverpool flat out refusing him any venue too!

I'm torn on this one. While I think it's excellent that his show's been cancelled, I really do believe we should allow people like that to speak freely, and show us all who they are and what they are.

Tom4784 30-01-2020 12:02 PM

People can speak freely whenever they want, they simply aren't entitled to do so on someone else's stage.
