Horror remakes - good or bad?

Anyone into horror think any remakes are better than the originals? I think a majority kinda flop but some are far better

The Hills Have Eyes - The remake is far better than the original in every single way to me, the backstory was better, the acting was far better and much scarier. I think the original was just ok and the cast let it down significantly.

Pirahna 3D - I love the remake and hated the original. apart from the attack on the summer camp it was dull and mutated fish escaping? like it's just a bit meh, the remake was a riot and the massacre at the party was insane

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - While the original is great and still stands up today even the remake is just as good to me, if not a tad better. The last 12 - 20 mins of the original is full on weird and the decaying grandpa sucking up blood was just an odd choice. I'd say these are both great.

Prom Night - Controversialy I like the remake a little better, yeah the original has much better horror elements but the remake imo felt like a great thriller rather than a horror but it worked and the acting from brittany snow and the adult characters were all spot on, wheras I think JLC looks bored in the original.

Friday the 13th - The original is much better without doubt but I never believed mrs vorhees did all that, felt a little unreal and I dont mind that but a 60ish lady managed to hold a healthy young guy down? She picked up a woman taller than her high enough to toss her through a window? Hmm, the remake gets it right with Jason being the killer straight away and him running made him scary again. The characters were trash though apart from 3 and they shock kill the fan favourite and it felt cheap af

A Nightmare on Elm Street Remake had some promise, the opening and Katie Cassidy made a great start but jeez after they killed her off the movie absolutely stink, the cast looked bored and Rooney Mara was shocking as Nancy, one of the worst actresses around. Even for its minor faults the original is fantastic

I agree with The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D and TTCM remakes all being better than the originals. I haven't seen the original Prom Night but I loved the remake and I love Friday the 13th remake more than the original tbh. Haven't seen ANOES remake, looked **** and doubt it touches the original.

A few remakes I enjoyed, although I haven't seen any of their originals are:

1. Black Christmas
2. House of Wax
3. The Last House On The Left
4. Sorority Row
5. When a Stranger Calls
6. The Hitcher
7. My Bloody Valentine

I guess these aren't so conventional "horror movies" but both new IT chapters are waaay better than the OG's.

I really enjoyed the 2013 Evil Dead remake/reboot too.

The reboot of Suspiria a few years ago with Dakota Johnson was great too.

...I’m not a huge horror fan so I haven’t watched loads..(..but just googling the remakes..)...The Crazies was one and I liked that...plus The Ring would be an obvious successful one...?...I liked The Ring also...I haven’t seen any of the originals though...

I liked The Hills Have Eyes, Black Christmas (00's Version) and Texas Chainsaw Massacre's remakes, so I have no issues with them if they're good.

Anyone seen The Fog remake? Possibly the worst horror remake of all time, up there at the very least. For such a big budget movie the only actress any good was Selma Blair and the ending is laughable, I do hate how they try and explain why killers like that turn up, yeah some need explaining like the guy in Prom Night, obsessed with the girl, kills all those who get in his way but the original Fog was creepy because the Fog runs in and although you find out at the end it's for their stolen treasure the change up that they want their captains bride back in the remake was soooooo lame haha

Rob Zombie's Halloween - I liked Rob's House of 1000 Corpses but phew his halloween remake sucks so much, Micahel is creepiest not knowing why he's killing, so to add a backstory for him is unnecessary and makes him far less likeable to me, being from a trashy home isnt an excuse to kill animals and eventually school mates and Sheri Moon is a terrible actress, I also hated how they changed Loomis into a money hungry faux dr and honestly danielle Harris is a far better actress than lead Scout Taylor Compton. Halloween ll remake was a little better but both are trash compared to the original movies

The Evil Dead remake was amazing but then I never did watch the original

Kazanne 02-02-2020 10:32 AM

Nothing will beat the original black and white film of The Haunting imo.

In general horror remakes suck. The only one I didn’t mind was Friday the 13th.

Barry. 02-02-2020 12:29 PM

Prom night is ranked one of the worst horror remakes on IMDb. (2.9 I think) but it's injoyable and watchable.

I tend to like remakes a lot. I saw the rebooted Grudge, it was not very good imo.

My favourite remake is black Xmas and no not the 2019 remake.

Cal. 02-02-2020 01:15 PM

I love the remakes for Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D, Friday the 13th and Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Black Christmas remake was a bit of fun but a completely different movie to the original and Rob Zombie’s Halloween was just a mess and an insult to the fantastic original.

Has anyone seen the 2019 Black Christmas? utter trash.

Gave it a miss after your review of it.

It was ok but not very good.

Tony Montana 02-02-2020 02:17 PM

More of a thriller than an actual horror but Disturbia is amazing.

Amy Jade 02-02-2020 03:01 PM

Just watching Quarantine which is a remake or [REC•] and it's not so bad but it's a pointless remake to me as it's almost a scene by scene remake so adds nothing new

More I've thought of too

House of Wax - I saw the remake first and loved it, good storyline and the victims are largely likeable and interesting. Apart from the name it's got zero to do with the original and I'm glad tbh because it's very weak as horrors go

Cabin Fever not a fan of the original but at least it was an original story and most of the acting was good. The remake was pure trash, literally a cash in with no original ideas.

Most horror remakes are pretty bad, you get the occasional gems like Evil Dead and Dawn of the Dead but aside from that it's pretty bleak.

IT: Chapter 1 is excellent but that's less of a remake and more of another adaptation of the book.

I'm in shock that there's a Nightmare on Elm Street remake.

Is nothing sacred?

Alf 02-02-2020 03:40 PM

Robert England as Freddie Kruger is iconic. You can't redo that. It's just wrong.

Jackie Earle Haley did an okay job but nobody will outdo Robert Englund and the script for the remake was weak af, it was pretty good for about 30 minutes but after that it's just garbage. It felt like a teen drama more than a horror.

Amy Jade 02-02-2020 03:59 PM

I think the Evil Dead remake is good but a little overrated. I never liked the original either. The best part of the movie is Jane Levy, she was perfect and I liked the nurse character but the rest were just annoying, the dude in glasses was infuriating actually.

If they do a sequel though and bring back Bruce Campbell as Ash I hope it's just a small role at the end or something, people whizz about him but I think hes awful, cheapness every film hes in with his poor acting

Adamw92 02-02-2020 05:54 PM

I’m a fan of the horror remakes, I tend to prefer a lot of them to the originals. Some of my favourites are When a Stranger Calls, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Sorority Row, The Hills Have Eyes, The Crazies, Halloween, The Amityville Horror and Prom Night. Controversial, I know, but I also loved the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street though I would have had Katie Cassidy as Nancy because she was more engaging than Rooney Mara.

Some of the originals are more classic but a lot of them aren’t scary to me and I find them ridiculous at times.

Amy Jade 02-02-2020 06:10 PM

Rooney Mara was awful as Nancy, seriously one of the least likeable final girls in horror I can ever think of, even bad syfy horrors with sharks that breath fire have better final girls.

After the movie came out she was bragging about hoe easy the role was to get and she never really wanted it she just wanted to be in a lead role. They should have shocked us and killed off Nancy and had Kris as the lead because most agree Katie Cassidy gave the better performance.

Anyone else prefer the Omen remake more than the original? Or is it just me?

Prefer the original personally.
