Petrol and diesel car sales ban brought forward to 2035

[A ban on selling new petrol,
diesel or hybrid cars in the UK will be
brought forward from 2040
to 2035 at the latest, under government plans.
The change comes after experts said 2040
would be too late if the UK wants
to achieve its target of emitting
virtually zero carbon by 2050.
Boris Johnson unveiled the policy
as part of a launch event for
a United Nations climate summit
in November.
He said 2020 would be a
"defining year of climate action"
for the planet.
The summit, known as COP26,
is being hosted in Glasgow.
It is an annual UN-led gathering
set up to assess progress on
tackling climate change.
Sir David Attenborough said
at the launch event at London's
Science Museum that he was looking
forward to COP26 and
found it "encouraging" that the UK government
was launching a "year of climate action".

I've just got a hybrid so I'm easing myself into the change. We need a lot better electric car facilities here though before they can make everyone go full electric.

Yes a good start

Hybrid is more safe as the back up
means you are OK in places with no charging points

Good move, I'd say it should be earlier but thats a little unrealistic

They should go down in price, first

The grid isn't capable of handling full electric and the government seem to keep kicking that little stumbling block into the long grass.

Problem 1) Parts of the grid need modernised so that charging points can be installed without overloading the local supply.

Problem 2) While the UK generates enough energy to charge a full nation of electric cars, that assessment has been made based on the raw numbers. The reality is that there will be far less charging happening from 9am - 5pm, and then a massive surge in requirements between around 5.30pm - 7pm when people get home from work and plug in. Like the old "ad break" problem when everyone turned on their kettles at once.

Ok this is fine but the it needs to be made farrr more accessible

Firstly I hardly see electric charge points anywhere that dont have a car already being charged

Secondly I cant afford a new car so if i do change I will probably be buying a second hand maybe even third hand or even fourth hand car that wont be electric. Im all for helping the environment but what if we cant afford one? That said its 15 years away hopefully im better off financially by the time im 45! 45....wow thats depressing!!

I imagine they will have some sort of scrappage scheme in place like they did for the older cars recently

All Electric Cars are over priced.

Turkey is making a Cheaper Electric Car.

Hopefully by the time 2035 is here they'll be much cheaper

they need to do some serious research into improving battery life and making charging quicker and more efficient. At the moment, it not possible to do a journey like london to manchester without am overnight stay and a recharge ... that's just not a feasible situation

It's possible that they can get things ready (at a push) but the environmental impact of achieving that is probably off the scale, so it's all basically nonsense
