Boycott Britannia Hotels

They fired staff and evicted live in staff on the spot

Staff at a hotel in the Scottish Highlands have been sacked on the spot and told to leave their accommodation immediately – with the company pinning the blame on government coronavirus advice. A letter was sent to workers at the Coylumbridge Hotel in Aviemore – which is run by the Britannia Hotels group – who appear to have made the decision based on advice from the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak. A member of staff at the hotel said some people had been affected, but that it was not 30, as had been reported elsewhere. The ‘heartless’ letter, circulating on social media along with calls for a boycott, has been slammed by politicians, industry leaders and the public alike, with Britannia being hammered for offering ‘one week’s pay in lieu of notice’ – despite new measures to help businesses. It says: ‘Taking the latest government advice, this letter is to confirm that with effect from March 19 2020, your employment has been terminated as your services are no longer required. ‘Your final payslip will include all hours worked up to and including your final day, together with any accrued holidays not already taken and one week’s pay in lieu of notice.

Indeed. After it went viral they got panned down to o1ne-star on every ratings site but they've already had all of the "false" reviews removed. They essentially used "government advice" to sack people by making out that that the hotel might be "needed". It will absolutely NOT be needed for overflow care in ****ing Aviemore - it's in the middle of nowhere! :idc:.

Won't be going there to fix any tvs if asked..that is a promise.

Workers at both The Savoy Blackpool, and The Metropole Blackpool have also been treated the same way, absolutely disgusting behaviour. The company I work for is letting live in staff live rent-free and doing all they can to make sure we get paid.

Yes well everyone is totally disgusted by this company's behaviour , just dumping people like trash , i hope they go bankrupt as they get no government help ~ that would be a good Karma.

Well thats very pleasing to hear that not all hotel staff are being treated in the most shabby way. Sounds like your company has someone with a brain making decisions.

Yep, thank god, obviously there's a limit to what they can do as the company is no longer actually functioning until all this is over (aside from a few admin trying to sort stuff). Hopefully with Boris' measures today, we should be sorted. We've been told our jobs will be waiting for us at the other side.

arista 21-03-2020 06:21 AM

Yes that was unwise
What was announced last night
could have saved those workers.

bots 21-03-2020 06:32 AM

Disgusting behaviour. I won't use them

Mystic Mock 21-03-2020 07:47 AM

Well that's one business I won't be rooting for to recover from this disaster Economically.

There was a private pharmacy on the news who were selling Calpol at 10.00 a pop and Paracetomol for 6.00, :skull: expect his customers to desert him in six months time

The Highland hotel that attracted widespread condemnation on Friday after it sacked staff and made them homeless during the coronavirus outbreak has apologised and excused their heartless actions as “an administrative error”.

The Guardian reported yesterday that more than a dozen workers at the Coylumbridge hotel near Aviemore received a letter on Thursday informing them management was “taking the latest government advice” and that staff employment had been terminated, with those who live at the hotel complex asked to leave the premises immediately.

But the Britannia Hotels group, which owns the hotel, did not respond to requests from the Guardian for comment, but later told theLiverpool Echo:”Unfortunately, the communication sent to these employees was an administrative error. All affected employees are being immediately contacted. We apologise for any upset caused.”

Administrative error my arse.
Back pedalling hard now

arista 21-03-2020 07:47 PM

So long as they get there jobs
and accommodation back

user104658 21-03-2020 09:21 PM

"Administrative error" in the sense that it was sent out by lower-level management at that specific hotel, and the hotel group will have gone absolutely ham about the level of bad publicity. I doubt the guy who authorised the action will be working with them for much longer.

bots 21-03-2020 09:28 PM

yeah, they aren't fooling anyone with the administration error, in fact, it makes it worse because they are trying to make excuses

Unless the administration error was hiring that particular manager in the first place? :hehe:

you can't blame the PM for them throwing live ins on to the street without any time to make alternative arrangements. And please stop trying to blame the PM for everything. It's not a good look

Tbf to Boris he can't do anything without the backing of his Party, the same with any leader.

I think that he is struggling to handle juggling the Party, Media, and the general public at the same time though as I think that we're asking for him to do different things that all end up contradicting each other.

We should set up a TiBB Sh1t List for all the companies who have treated people appallingly during this time. Chucking people out of their job and their home on the same day, during such a worrying time, is despicable.

Agreed, people should remember what companies have done people wrong during this time

Same, really lucked out with them, they're doing right by us all

smudgie 22-03-2020 01:46 PM

Hotels all over the country are laying staff off.
Unfortunate risk of the job, especially those that cater more for the holiday maker.
