Good for him. This is kind of shining a light on how pathetic Celebrity(tm) really is. When we have vapid fools like Brie Larson whinging about female critics while there is real injustice - people can't afford food, some people don't have healthcare in the USA - and then Sam Smith was having a breakdown in his mansion about how hard it is for him...

I've long thought Hollywood as an "institution" should be burned down.

Has Brie Larson been doing this during lockdown or are you comparing two completely different things at completely different times?

Using the world-wide pandemic to further your "there is no racial or gender bias" is actually repulsive.

Have to agree, you can't compare celebrities complaining about smaller things DURING the pandemic to things that have gone on in the past... One thing being a huge issue doesn't make smaller problems irrelevant. Obviously some things are less important now than they were 4 months ago... Brexit is a prime example... But that doesn't mean it wasn't important - or that it'll never be an important discussion again.

Its sort of like the logic that "poor people in rich countries have nothing to complain about because they have smartphones while poor people in Africa are starving". Or the current (worrying) "the government is suddenly beyond question because A VIRUS!" narrative.

Inequality doesn't stop being a problem just because there are also other problems.

Oliver_W 14-04-2020 11:06 AM

Okay I admit Brie Larson being a Karen is pretty trivial at the moment :joker:

Marsh. 14-04-2020 11:07 AM

Inadvertently being one of the complainers you were trying to complain about. Oop.

:umm2: what's the point from Ricky Gervais, i don't understand this, comes more across to me as this vile gervais as trolling for attention

He always trolls lol, it's practically part of his brand. But his targets are usually fair,I love when he mercilessly mocks celebrities and/or Hollywood in things he's hosting. He's also big into animal rights, which along with environmentalism, is one of my biggest issue convictions.

I don't see what's trolling. His point is clear, he finds the complaining from celebs (such as Sam Smith sobbing in his online videos) whose only problems are boredom during lockdown. It's completely inappropriate.

he calls that moaning but actually he's also moaning there about other people's moaning :laugh3:

His moaning has substance. Sobbing in online videos about how bored you are in your mansion whilst people are dying and others are putting themselves at risk to help those fallen ill is on another level.

But ignore that... because you don't like Gervais. Odd stance to take.

i find Gervais bit too controversial for my liking in his jokes, that's all

however about this all, those ''stars'' who i see staying at home most who i like don't complain

cannot speak for every single celebrity but i do see some keeping themselves busy with home workouts, some who share nice uplifting messages via social media

but good that he is aware of NHS staff risking their lives anyway, maybe he can donate some money too to the NHS for all the dangers their personnel goes through in this crisis

Yes, it's always someone else who could do with donating that money. ;)

Not really, you're the one raising female gender inequality during the pandemic, not Brie Larson.

user104658 14-04-2020 01:00 PM

The Brie Larson thing is 90% internet/redpill nonsense.

Yes, she used the launch of Captain Marvel to briefly mention women's rights on a few occasions. Was it the wrong platform for it? Probably, people don't really want a dose of politics in the promo interviews for their action blockbuster, she should have stuck with the film in interviews about the film.

Thing is, she did it maybe two or three times in the entire press tour for Captain Marvel... and a bunch of screeching incels latched onto it like she had erupted from hell to spew forth endless misandry. It didn't happen. The rumours that her cast mates hated her? Didn't happen. Cherry picked comments and glances from interviews where if you watch the whole interview it's pretty obvious that it's banter. Someone actually took time out of their day to do a YouTube breakdown of an interview with her and Hemsworth to "prove" that he can't stand her. For one I have no idea what mindset it takes to spend time on something like that. And more importantly - if you have any concept of basic human interaction it's pretty obvious that they are PLAYING. :idc:

So yeah... IMO the Internet backlash against Brie Larson for pretty much nothing just goes to show that there IS a heap of misogyny that flies around, especially when it comes to blockbusters. Certain corners of the Internet decided that Brie Larson's butt was too flat, and her mouth was too big, and that wasn't OK with them. Sad.

...... But anyway, sorry for talking equality in a pandemic etc.

:joker:

The only thing she did that put me off her was when she posted that video of her pushing a car, in neutral, down a hill as an example of the strength she'd built up for the role.

But I can't even remember if she posted that sincerely or as a joke.

I think she has a very dry/deadpan sense of humour and that's not as common in Americans so a lot of 'em genuinely don't know what to take seriously. That was my other take-away from the interview with Hemsworth. They bounce insults and comebacks in a really dry way that most of the "comments" were taking as a real argument, but in truth it's just Hemsworth being an Aussie, and Australians DO have a dry humour. Prolly cos it's so hot there. HEHEHEHEHE.

Oliver_W 14-04-2020 09:19 PM

I thought she was funny in that Chris Hemsworth thing, she was obviously being dry/sarcastic. People trying to read more into that need to get a life. I don't watch youtubers -I'm a bit funny with voices and "talking to camera" type things piss me off- but yeah that entire "backlash" came from those basement dwellers.

It was just eye-rolley when she was bleating on about how there are more male than female critics when she could be talking about women being forced into prostitution or FGM in some parts of the world. If she wants to talk about women's rights, she could focus on actual issues.

That's just whataboutery. You're deflecting from one issue to another.

As TS said earlier, just because another issue exists or a "worse" issue, doesn't erase the original issue. You not giving a sh*t about it doesn't change it.

The comparison was that we have people whinging in their mansions about how bored they are while practically all of their fans will probably never set foot in a house like that, while before we had people making ego-stroking speeches about minor issues instead of using their platform for more.

I dunno, there's something there :joker:

That's not a comparison.

You're basically saying "ERMAGUD why are you making valid points about the industry in which you work when there are people all around the world going through something much worse and completely unrelated to what you're talking about".

It's not a comparison, it's a silly attempt at shutting them down using zero actual arguments against their points.

Or she may want to talk about what she knows? What's going on around her? Why is she not allowed to do that?
