Dune (released December 2020)

I couldn't find a thread on this.

This is an upcoming Sci-Fi epic based on the 1965 novel of the same name, and a remake of the 1984 flick. The film will be split into two parts. I haven't seen the original 1984 film, nor read the novel, but the A-list cast and Denis Villeneuve (one of the best directors around atm) are enough to interest me.

The film stars Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Zendaya, Stellan Skarsgård, Dave Bautista, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa and Javier Bardem.

Here's the plot.

Quote:

In the far future of humanity, Duke Leto Atreides accepts stewardship of the dangerous desert planet Arrakis, the only source of the most valuable substance in the universe, "the spice", a drug which extends human life, provides superhuman levels of thought, and makes foldspace travel possible. Though Leto knows the opportunity is an intricate trap set by his enemies, he takes his Bene Gesserit concubine Lady Jessica, young son and heir Paul, and most trusted advisers to Arrakis, also known as Dune. Leto takes control of the spice mining operation, which is made perilous by the presence of giant sandworms. A bitter betrayal leads Paul and Jessica to the Fremen, natives of Arrakis who live in the deep desert.
There's already been some new first look photos.

I think I've watched the original movie and played Dune 2 on Sega Genesis.

Calderyon 15-04-2020 12:51 PM

Will watch this at some point, of course.

I liked the David Lynch film when I saw it when I was young.

Amy Jade 15-04-2020 09:58 PM

I'll watch for Timothee alone

Is the original any good?

I don't think it is well regarded but I liked it.

There is also a TV mini series adaption which I remember being okay.

The Dune book series is great. The original film had Sting in it which was a bit of a downer for me. The books are so involved that it's impossible for a film to capture more than just an essence of the story, but I will certainly watch it.

I played the original Dune PC game and loved it :flutter:, and of course Dune 2 which was the catalyst/precursor for the classic RTS - it was made by Westwood who then went on to develop their own IP's where the gameplay mechanics are heavily Dune 2 influenced... Dune's "Spice" becoming "Tiberium" for the Command & Conquer series (which in turn influenced things like Starcraft).

Some geeky triva 4 u.

So reading the premise and looking at the cast, I see Atreides, Harkonnen, Fremen... but where is Ordos?

Saving them for the sequel?

Tony Montana 09-09-2020 05:38 PM

First official trailer's here! It looks incredible!

Calderyon 09-09-2020 08:18 PM

Ordos being absent is a mistake.

Vanessa 09-09-2020 09:37 PM

arista 09-09-2020 11:52 PM

Vanessa 14-04-2022 06:27 PM

The original or the new one? I like both!

arista 15-04-2022 04:16 PM

As a Long film
it had too many Dark Light bits

The ending
looks like ready for a Continuation
of another film

Part 2 is already confirmed, and yes this film only covers the first half of the first Dune book, so I personally say viewers beware: you're not getting a full story here and will have to wait a couple of years for the next part. It's not even like a lot of films that are self-contained and then have a "sequel" ... the structure of this film is very much a "part one of two". It ends half way through the narrative, on somewhat of a cliffhanger.

user104658 15-04-2022 04:49 PM

It is a gorgeous film though, both in terms of visuals and sound design, definite chef's kiss.

I however agree with arista; watch it at night in a dark room, there are some very dark scenes that can be hard to make out even with a little light shining on the screen. If there's sunlight coming in, forget it, you won't be able to see half of it in some scenes :joker:.

bots 15-04-2022 05:25 PM

Hans did the entire soundtrack during lockdown which is why its 99% sound design. The result is amazing though

Yes, let's hope Dune 2
does not have the same bad light
as this mega film has.

James 30-05-2022 05:58 PM

I've watched it now. I thought it was great at the start, I was really into it. It peters out a bit in the last half hour.

Was a bit disappointed not to see the Guild Navigators.
