Big Brother UK could make a comeback this year, on telly now Love Island's cancelled

Big Brother is being tipped for a potential return to screens this year.

The reality series ran for 19 series from 2000 up until it was axed by Channel 5 in 2018.

With the current global health crisis forcing many other shows to be cancelled - including ITV2's Love Island - could Big Brother be back to fill the gap in schedules?

The show's format would appear to work well with the current restrictions: Potential housemates could be quarantined before entering the house where they'd only come into contact with one another.

Remote cameras and producers communicating only via the voice of Big Brother mean that filming could adhere to any social distancing restrictions.

Bookies have slashed the odds on the comeback from 14/1 to just 2/1 on a new series airing this summer, according to mybettingsites.co.uk.

A mybettingsites.co.uk spokesperson said: “Love Island is very much reality TV’s hottest property but as this season’s summer series have been cancelled, there are whispers of a Big Brother comeback and the odds suggest it may just happen.”

“The Big Brother format with a number of people stuck in a house together very much lend itself to the current situation of self-distancing, as long as all contestants are tested before entering the house, which should be very straight forward.”

While there's no official word on a Big Brother revival yet, reports earlier this year claimed that Channel 4 had been in 'secret talks' to bring the format back.

Big Brother first launched on Channel 4 in 2000 before moving to Channel 5 in 2011 where it last aired in autumn 2018.

Meanwhile former BBUK host Emma Willis said she'd love to see a celebratory series in 2020 - 20 years since Big Brother's UK debut.

“If they did anything, I’d be devastated not to be involved in it," she said in an interview in 2019. “It’s been a huge part of my life, both working on it and watching it."

Emma told The Sun newspaper: “It needs an anniversary, a big birthday. To never do it again would be a terrible shame.

“It has to find its feet and be celebratory and fun.”

You have to be stupid to believe that's going to happen

Vanessa 07-05-2020 10:40 AM

I heard that as well.

Because the only solution to replace a TV show what was axed due to social distancing concerns is to replace it with a show where you have even less space to social distance

I-

Love Island you normally go to a foreign country so you're with the airplane travel risks too

BBUK can work more and much easier under social distancing regulations since housemates can be tested before they go into house, and once in the house they do not have outside contacts anymore

and anyone who does enter from outside world, must wear protective masks (this is the case now in big brother Germany i noticed) more like not to infect any of the housemates

These kind of articles annoy me because there’s literally zero proof or substance. “Bookies have slashed the odds” is hardly newsworthy.

Great idea imo, I think if it did come back this summer the ratings would be the best in years

Like they say in the article it could easily be done and channels can't film much else atm

Cherie 09-05-2020 11:33 AM

In the current climate it could be back to its best as a social experiment, they were able to carry on with the German one so there is no reason it couldn’t happen ..

They don’t even have a house

We can’t even see our family and friends so 16 houseguests who aren’t from the same household going into one house will not go down well.

and whose fault would that be, that vile disgusting piece of **** of a Ben Frow :idc:

Yes he personally knocked it down with his bulldozer

Nicky91 09-05-2020 02:27 PM

also in Germany they are thinking of health, safety too

anyone who isn't a housemate, but part of crew (apart from host but he has to stand 1.5 metres from housemates while explaining tasks) crew need to wear face masks since they got outside contacts

but for the rest housemates are allowed to socialize as usual with each other, even one showmance currently in BB Germany (Tim & Gina) so that bit is also allowed

as for tv studio (no audience so no boo's, or any of that drama crap) just host with one panellist(s) i say panellists each week someone else reviewing what hm's do well or not do well, more like informing public how to send out ratings to hm's

If it's really true that bookies have slashed odds to 2-1, that is meaningful because generally you can bet the other side , meaning bet that this will not happen. Bookies would get trounced with losses from people doing that if there wasn't something really to this. I do agree that the biggest obstacle would be having a house built and equipped so quickly, but it is possible by later in the summer

Epic. 09-05-2020 04:31 PM

It's a pipe dream I'm afraid </3 </3 Would be a pleasant surprise, even to have as a one-time 'quarantine edition' for this year but staff working on shows I'm sure can't really be in contact with each other anyway so that is another obstacle

I doubt it. Even lockdown doesn't make C5 BB watchable.

If they'd offered to let him he probably would have.

Honestly, as much as I want this to be true, this type of story is always spun when Love Island faces controversy of some sort, I seem to remember similar stories around the time of both Caroline and Mike's suicides, yet nothing came of it and now this. This stories always spun out, due to the fact that for a long time LI and BB were rivals with one another and they have an idea that BB was cancelled because of LI, when they say that just because LI'S out of commission temporarily, that means BBUK can come back.

When in actual fact the reason, BBUK was canned was because of 2 reasons; Ben Frow's not a good director of CH5 and BBUK was bleeding ratings at the time of it's ending, nothing to do with LI.
