So jumping straight into 50th, we have the Jonas Brothers comeback album. I’ll be honest straight off the bat, this was a reunion I didn’t have many hopes for. I never vibed with their original endeavour, and I felt Joe and Nick (and, well Kevin?) had both gone on to much better sounds with their solo projects. But, I was shocked to say the least when I heard Sucker and it was just a sound that worked. It was modern, it was catchy, it just sounded good. And upon hearing Cool, it marked the point where I decided I was going to give this reunion a chance.

It’s an album that impresses with its singles, from those I’ve mentioned, but falls flat on some of its album exclusives. Don’t Throw It Away, Happy When I’m Sad, Hesitate and Rollercoaster have really nice sounds, they’re a good bop every now and then. Whilst I enjoy most of the songs on this album whilst I’m listening through, there’s nothing particularly memorable here. I mean, I’ve been listening to it whilst setting up this thread to refresh myself, and I remember only half of the 14 song album which isn’t an impressive statistic.

But it earns a spot on my ranking because there’s nothing offensive here and everything’s fairly pleasant listening.

I support this placement if not just for the fact that Joe Jonas is pointing his bum in my direction on the album cover

Sorry Daniel :p

This is one of the albums I’ve listened to most recently, but it’s already made an impression on me. Despite being Neck Deep’s weakest album by quite a stretch imo, I found it to be an enjoyable listen. It was my introduction to a heavier sound, and I found it to be great for breaking that in. Like the Jonas Brothers album I found some of the songs to feel quite similar sounding, but I think if I get a bit longer with it then I’ll definitely grow a little more love for it. I think Losing Teeth is an incredible opener, and definitely a standout track for me.

For me it’s 100% a top heavy album, I much prefer the tracks at the start and my interest drains a little towards the end, but it doesn’t affect my overall thought of it being a solid album too much and I’d still give it a solid 7/10.

Tyler Joseph’s first and only solo album is the next one out. Although lyrically deep, touching on hard-hitting issues such as suicide, mental health and depression in most of the tracks (including Drown, Taken By Sleep and Goner, the latter being remastered many times in the future), my main criticism is the production quality. It was a completely self produced album by a teenage musician new to sound technology, so as you can expect audio issues and technical glitches are a regular occurrence.

But that aside, it’s an incredibly well written album. Known for his more subtle and layered lyricism in recent years, No Phun Intended provides a very blunt and explicit look at Joseph’s teenage state. In many of the tracks he calls upon his religion to provide him answers, and in Prove Me Wrong, one of my personal favourites, he questions his ability to fall in love.

Overall, it’s an album that I see as a huge window into Joseph’s life, both through the music, the lyrics and the skill. It’s not an album I return to often, but it’s an album that I can appreciate for what it is.

Although it has one of my favourite album covers of all time, the same unfortunately cannot be said for the album content. One this I’ll praise is the lyricism, the way Tyler Joseph tells a story is something I’ll never be short of amazed at, and this especially shines in Addict With a Pen.

Some of the highs of the album, for me, occur on the upbeat, pop-rock-rap infused bangers like a Fall Away, Friend Please, Air Catcher and Trapdoor. On the other hand, some of the tracks get a little, well, boring, and having a string of piano-centric songs drags the album from what twenty one pilots are best known for.

I still praise the lyricism, and each song has a story I can get behind and delve into (and so do each of the band members x), but it’s not an album that is easy to get through if you prefer something with higher energy.

I mean they still had a drummer (albeit not one of Josh’s standard) and the drums weren’t technically the direct issue (but sure, I’d have been happier with more). The album just needed a few more bops, or even just a few more generally upbeat songs. The piano ballads get boring after a while.
