A statue for the present day

In Växjö, Sweden. Local housewife Danuta Danielsson smacking a Neo-Nazi round the head with her handbag in 1985. She became a local hero, so they immortalised her with a statue.

yeah that's pretty finny :joker:

But that photo was from 1985?! Judging by that, have they only just got colour cameras?

Probably clipped from a newspaper.

Yes, I like this idea because for me the most iconic thing I've seen for a long time was the pulling down of the statue in Bristol. I mean, what...what the **** was it even erected for in the first place.

I love that statue in the pic, it reminds me of my granny and her wet tea towel.

Sadiq Khan has ordered a full review of London statues, looks like there will be a few more for you to enjoy :idc:

They better not touch Cromwell, I like to give it a kick when I pass it :smug:

As Cherie said above the Mayor of London,( in my own view), is at last doing something right, in having looked at statues of the city.

Likewise, I agree re Cromwell.
What that eyesore of an individual and his statue is doing erected anywhere, is beyond me.
Awful man.

Actually it looks like some overdue consideration is starting to come into play as to the more undesirable erection of some people as statues.

I wonder why Khan didn't bother waking up and actually doing something to stop the riots.

Translation: Why can't he stop people being able to protest things I personally give no sh*t about? Whilst at the same time I can complain about the decline of free speech.

What riots?

You know that's the point of immortilising figures it's easy to forget those that truly stood up on the side of what's right, that's who should be celebrated. They may not have made the history books but they are worthy local heros.

Any rich land/mill/ slave owner can throw the poor a few quid in his will and they are admonished and elevated to pariah.

Who was in charge of the commissioning of these works?..more of the same no doubt...puffed up public school boys turned masons churning out more of the same to ensure the grip they have in power is never under threat.

I'm certain Windrush was a slave ship...
Those people were never intended to grow old and enjoy a peaceful retirement here, as soon as they are no longer use full back you go!

And of course they got away with it.

Look at old farmer landowner, how does his charter plane full of pickers for 5 weeks not smack of exploitation?

Look at the outsourcing we've done for our coal, we Don't have industry we simply buy overseas labour at a fraction of the cost. We are no better than the slave owners and traders..we did it then and we're doing it now.

Just looked up the background of this woman and now I feel sad
Quote:

Danuta Danielsson, the woman in the photo, committed suicide,[4] jumping to her death from a water tower, two years after the photo's release.[5][better source needed] She was born in 1947 and moved to Sweden after marrying a Swedish man she had met at a jazz festival. She was of Polish heritage and her mother had been imprisoned in Majdanek concentration camp during World War II.[1][6] A local artist, Susanna Arwin, expressed desire to raise a life-sized statue of Danielsson but it was ultimately decided against for two reasons, the first being that council members in Växjö were concerned such a statue could be interpreted as promoting violence and the second being that Danielsson's surviving family reported that they would be unhappy with Danielsson memorialized in such a manner.[7][8][9][10]

The man hit by Danielsson is identified as Seppo Seluska, a militant from the Nordic Realm Party later convicted for the torture and murder of a gay Jewish person.[11][12][13]
