Favourite Supermarket chain

Every Saturday I take the bus from the centre of Newcastle to the Morrisons at Byker, on the Shields Road (See attached image)

This Saturday I thought I would try the Safeway in Newcastle, just off of the Green Market in Clayton Street.

The Broccoli was passed its display by date, the carrots were hmmm, The selection in the delli was passe, so I walked out and went to Morrisons again.

There I recuperated in the restaurant with Scrambled Egg on toast with a pot of tea for one and then did my shopping.

Which Supermarkets do you like and which has the best restaurant facilities

herindoors 08-06-2003 10:35 AM

Ive always liked morrisons even though i worked at asda for 9 years. we have to go quiet a way to our morrison but you can alway find what you want. The selection is really good and the deli counter alway s looks really nice:hugesmile::elephant:

Out of my local supermarkets I like Waitrose best which isn't listed.

Morrisons is always overcrowded and garish in my experience.

BTW Whay AM I talking about supermarkets ????:conf:

BigSister 08-06-2003 11:10 AM

I have voted for tesco but i also like Asda

sweetlittlesara 08-06-2003 11:15 AM

Mine is Tescos hehehe. No, I dont really go to supermarkets much but this is the one that is nearest me and I am too lazy to go anywhere else. Food is Food.

Janette 08-06-2003 12:44 PM

For fresh fruit and vegetables, Morrisons is definitely the best.

For quality of own brands, Tesco is best.

But the cheapest by far is Asda!

Unfortunately, I don't have a Morrisons anywhere near me. I shop in Tescos and Sainsburys mostly and I've plumped for Sainsburys in the poll.

Once a month I treat myself and shop in Marks and Spencers. They are expensive but their food is by far the best.

I like Morrisons best although it does get very busy I usually try to shop in the daytime when its less crowded.:thumbs:

Great poll, Sticks!!

Hubby and I like to use Somerfield (not listed). You get excellent bargains - plenty of Buy 1 Get 1 Free!!

Sticks 08-06-2003 04:24 PM

But what about supermarket restaurants ? My father constantly sings the praise of the lunchtime menus at Morrisons

BusyBee 08-06-2003 04:36 PM

OH (when I can get him to accompany me) and I use our local Asda mostly - its only three minutes away by car - very useful:thumbs::thumbs:

and it definitely is the cheapest.

Our local Tesco is really big and I always get lost in it, but the restaurant is very good - do great jacket potatoes

:hello::hello:

However when I make a trip into town I always go to M&S. It may be expensive but the food is fantastic. Couldnt afford to go every week though.

Romantic Old Bird 08-06-2003 10:38 PM

Ah, well Waitrose is like a big M&S! It's not that much dearer than the others and so much nicer..........

Kaz 08-06-2003 10:46 PM

Morrisons? Never heard of it up here in Bonnie Scotland!

Living in a relatively small town, we have very little choice of 'big-time' supermarkets. . . . . . Somerfield, the Co-op, or Tesco. So my vote has gone to Tesco - the points come in very handy too!

vicky 08-06-2003 10:49 PM

my vote goes to Morrisons which i think is the best and is also conveniently the nearest to me. I tried kwik save at the weekend and wasn't too impressed.

cc100 09-06-2003 03:14 PM

sticks?

did u get that pic of there website or did u take it yourself??

i imagine the managers werent too keen on you taking pics

Sticks 09-06-2003 05:04 PM

I took that one above from the bus as it pulled into Shields road, so if they objected, there was nothing they could do since I took it from a public highway.

This one attached I took from the bustop across the road, so there is nothing they could have done about it

However I did take some shots inside, and no one complained

susieq 10-06-2003 12:06 AM

The nearest supermarkets to me are Asda and Kwik Save. I always go to Asda, it's cheap, they always seem to have loads of BOGOF's and I like the layout of the store.

Kwik Save, on the other hand is totally dire. Any shop that's still got turkeys and bread at 4pm on Christmas Eve is doing something terribly wrong!!!!

Stu xxx 10-06-2003 12:09 AM

i used to like Sainsburys untill i worked there for 11 months! The one i go to most is Tesco as it is the nearest but Asda are great on prices!

lyndy 10-06-2003 12:25 AM

Tesco's gets my vote as its the nearest (theyre also opening a big tesco extra soon) i like asda's too. i havent seen a morrisons around or heard of one here.i also like marks and spencer when i want a treat :hello::hello::hello:

1) I kept the digital camera in my pocket until I took the shot. Not aware of any one looking at me.

2) They could have asked me to stop or even leave the premises. This did not happen

3) This was for a one off assignment so I could compare my Morrison's with my Father's one in Beverley. I did take internalshots if you are interested

BTW there was one guy from a former soviet sate that was given permission to film inside a British supermarket so the folks could see what one looked like that actually had goods to sell. So I am not completely sad :flower:

which supermarket has the best deli?

i think tesco always stocks nice cooked meat etc.

James 18-06-2003 07:58 PM

Tesco do Internet shopping. Always handy that.

BusyBee 18-06-2003 09:09 PM

Asda do fantastic take-aways

Chinese, Indian, Mexican plus pick and mix salads

Also do meals for one, two etc. for these - quite a banquet you can have.

Plus they do stonking pizzas, make your own up if you want and done while you wait.
