charge back from banks

Has anyone used this and if so how long does it usually take. I am fed up of waiting for refunds for flights and a holiday booked so trying this route :fist:

There's no guarantee they'll do it and when they do, it can take ages. At a rough estimate usually 5 weeks bare minimum, can be several months. Depends on the circumstances really. The bank also might want evidence that you've tried to sort it out with the person/organisation you paid to.

My card was double-charged at Tesco because I tried to use the Tesco pay app... which said it had failed and asked me for another payment method so I used my card. Whole shop came off both. Tesco customers services won't do anything about it, they don't seem to be able to get their head around it being two charges to the card but via different methods (one being the app,one chip & pin).

Its "only" £60 but I contacted the bank about it and I've yet to hear anything at all. Must have been several months ago at this point. I had actually completely forgotten about it until I saw this thread :fist:. Thieving bastards!

Yeah it has to be a really specific set of circumstances, usually where there's a clear double charge on the statement etc.

I get the feeling that with a holiday, if the seller is saying they'll refund but just isn't actually doing it, the bank may well say it's a small courts claim to get the refund.

Debit card transactions don't have the same protections and guarantees as credit cards. If you have a credit card it's always worth making big purchases on that - even if you then just pay the balance from your bank immediately. You get a tonne of fraud protection/guarantees/charge back options with a good CC provider.

oh interesting, I have heard some more positive stories, my friend when to her back after getting vouchers for her airfare and the money was in her bank that evening

I've never tried it but I guess if you've been waiting too long it's worth a shot?

Our holidays that were cancelled due to covid were refunded the same day as our cancellation emails came through

Good luck

I think you're definitely due the refund but I think they might expect you to wait a bit longer to see if it comes through "as expected"... and also they might just say you can take it up with small claims if the company doesn't refund. If they've already said they will then it's a no-brainer and they'd most likely front up the cash as soon as the letter about a court claim came through, as they'd be liable for court costs too if it actually went that far.

Whether or not the bank will do a charge-back is down to human discretion it seems, an account manager will assess the case and make the decision on whether or not to put one through or decline. So a bit of a roll of the dice really. Depends who looks at your claim and how they're feeling that day! [emoji23]
