Kidnapped girl Shannon Matthews granted lifelong anonymity...

...great decision for Shannon...

A woman who as a child was kidnapped and drugged by her own mother has been granted anonymity for life after an "extraordinary" injunction by the High Court.

Shannon Matthews was the victim of a brutal scam by her mother Karen Matthews in 2008, who aimed to scoop a £50,000 reward for finding her daughter.

Matthews and her boyfriend's brother Michael Donovan were found guilty of kidnapping, false imprisonment and perverting the course of justice after Shannon was found hidden, drugged and tied up in the bottom of a bed – more than three weeks after going missing.

Shannon, now 21, and her siblings were taken into care and changed their names after the kidnapping. They are all protected by a restriction on reporting that is due to run out in 2021.

But the High Court has issued a sweeping new order meaning that their new names, addresses and jobs can never be revealed or published unless a court overrules the decision or the family revoke it.

Matthews and Donovan, of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, kidnapped Shannon, then 9, with the aim of pocketing the money from the reward offered to the people who found her.

They planned for Donovan to release Shannon in Dewsbury Market and pretend to find her before taking home the £50,000 reward after handing her into police.

Good, that poor girl, I hope she had a decent life after she was taken from her mother

I remember this story all that time ago and was absolutely shocked that her mother had done something so cruel like that.

I thought this would have been a given, we protect criminals makes sense we should protect victims.

I read a little about the mother now, she's currently engaged to a convicted paedophile. Kinda says it all really. Ironically the best thing she ever did for her kids was fake that abduction because at least they got away from the scummy Bch.....

Nasty :/ I just hope the children had an OK life since, being put into the system can have it's own problems too

Yeah that's very true. I know Shannon was fostered, hope the other kids had a good upbringing too, something they certainly were not getting with the horrible mother. Read the wiki -

Just utter and complete scum. Served only 4 years too

....through her life, she’ll always know what her mum did and that’s something she’ll never be able to be protected from../..the emotional damage, but I hope that she has great people in her life and great inspirations etc...I don’t know how she’ll feel about Karen...even with the worst of abuses, a child’s parental love and thoughts etc are so complex..

...I wish her the best life she can have...

I thought she already had anonymity , but I guess it's official that she has this for all her life now.

But poor Shannon already had to change location, name and probably the way she looks . But after her ordeal I guess she can live a peaceful life now .

it's just not right that any victim should be in the public eye unless it is something that they actively choose
