Cops blocked ports to search cars and lorries after the man, whose identity is legally protected, disappeared when his ankle tag was removed.

Witnesses in Dover told how every vehicle was checked, causing nine-mile tailbacks and delays of up to ten hours.

The man — one of just six Brits subject to a tough Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measure (TPim) — later handed himself in.

A source said: “Fortunately, he was on the run for a short period and there was no danger to the public.

“When someone on a TPim absconds, an all-ports alert is automatically triggered. These are tough measures imposed for a reason.”

Videos posted on social media showed police racing up to the docks at Dover at just before 11.30am.

Ferry operator DFDS told passengers to allow extra time to board while P&O warned of “extraordinary delays”.

UK-based courier service Freight Logistics Solutions tweeted: “Chaos on the roads this morning — huge delays building at Dover and Eurotunnel.”

A spokesman for UK Counter Terrorism Policing said: “A request was made by Counter Terrorism Policing nationally for enhanced security checks to be carried out at UK ports.

“This requirement has since been stood down. There is no threat to public safety in relation to this.”
