NL: two chimpanzees are shot dead after they escaped from amersfoort zoo

Two chimpanzees who escaped from their enclosure at Amersfoort’s DierenPark zoo have been shot dead, zoo officials have confirmed. The two male chimpanzees managed to leave their enclosure at around 10.30, prompting officials to evacuate the zoo. ‘In order to prevent any further escalation, the two male chimpanzees were shot dead,’ the zoo said. ‘We deeply regret this event.’ The zoo says it appears that a keeper did not lock up the enclosure properly, allowing the animals to get out. The investigation will continue in the coming days, but there does not appear to have been a technical error, the statement said.

The decision to shoot the animals, which have been part of the zoo’s chimpanzee group for a long time, was taken because they were demonstrating ‘dominant behavior… which could have led to a dangerous situation,’ the zoo said. ‘This is a black day for the zoo, and we deeply regret the situation,’ the zoo said. Victim support services are being offered to zoo staff and visitors. DutchNews.nl has asked the zoo why the decision was taken to kill the animals, rather than to shoot them with a tranquiliser gun.

:skull: :umm2: yeah why not sedate them

I dont know why they couldn't have been sedated with a dart, but as usual, lets just kill them, poor animals. Human error leads to them dying.

It is sad, but once chimps get going they can tear people to shreds really quickly, and sedation needs correct doses otherwise it would make them even more dangerous before it kicked in.

I get that, but couldn't they have 'netted' them and sedated them, I don't know the situation ,it just always seems with things like this the animals are shot dead, if they can shoot to kill ,surely they can shoot to sedate, it just seems an awful shame.

I think asking the netters to get close enough to free chimps showing signs of dominance, is basically giving them a death sentence, or at least a sentence to have their faces and genitals removed.

I'm sure that the people who work there and with them really care for the animals and would only have killed them as a last resort.

Although very sad and the careless keeper needs looking into if they were showing signs of aggression I kind of get it, wishful thinking they could be netted but if they were aggressive chimps can do serious damage. Look at the poor lady who's friend had a 'pet that ripped her face off.

yeah i know, they can sedate a larger animal (a gorilla) Bokito quite some years ago, but smaller chimps they can't sedate apparently because that takes too long to have effect in bringing them down

The irony of this being said on a big brother forum. But yes I agree many zoos are not in it for ethical reasons and the suffering and misttreatment of animals for entertainment is shameful.

Not quite the same is it, the chimps didn’t audition to get in or do it with free will
