Denmark to kill 17 million minks !!

This is disgusting ,IF these minks had not been bred for fur by greedy vain humans these animals would not have to be culled in their millions ,so cruel and a loss again at the hands of greedy sodding humans and you can bet they will meet with a horrible end, too maany of them to do it humanely (as if they would anyway):fist:

Samm 06-11-2020 04:57 PM

It’s either that or a new mutation of covid. please pick a struggle.

I agree, my point is these minks would not have to be killed if it wasnt for them being bred in their masses for the vanity of humans , again animals suffereing because of us,Those mink farms should never have existed in the first place.

They are not wandering round, they are bred in cages for fur

Saph 06-11-2020 05:04 PM

I am a sucker for anything small, fluffy and cute.. so if I could I'd adopt a couple

I cant go to pets at home anymore because I just get too tempted to buy a hamster or something

I'll pick the animals everytime. This virus started with the cruel use of animals in China etc via the wet markets, and now Denmark has to kill all the animals they bred ,for fur, will we ever bloody learn to leave animals alone and in their own enviroment.

joeysteele 06-11-2020 05:09 PM

Horrific
I'm with Kazanne here.

She's said all and more I would have.

The poor farmers, their livestock must be everything to them. I hope they get compensated.

No doubt the poor farmers will find some other animals to abuse ,afterall they have no choice, farmers do.

Beso 06-11-2020 05:45 PM

Thier faces are bat like. Or maybe they been humping bats on the sly and are full of covid.

I hope there is a reason for the slaughter.

I know someone who had a mink and they're really cute, reminded me of a ferret.

I think mink farming should be banned, all fur farming should be.

This too for me.

I say put an end to fur farms to, there's no difference between those and the markets in wuhan to me. Both breeding grounds for mutations in coronaviruses.

Tom4784 06-11-2020 08:58 PM

It's a vile story but something that sadly has to happen, the world is struggling with Covid, we simply can't afford a new string to break out.

Kizzy 06-11-2020 09:12 PM

I thought it had and that's why the cull? They can't risk the new strain rendering the vaccine developed for this strain useless and having to start again from scratch.

It's such a shame these lovely animals have to suffer but while there are vain idiots that provide a market for these furs there will be someone willing to exploit them.

The implication is fur farming exists because people buy the fur products which is honestly diabolical the fact that there’s a market for that

If I see any old woman, or some slim but dim Sloane square male wandering about in a designer mink mask..I will promise tibb and especially kaz..the van will be stopped

...I feel sad that some horrendous things are not getting such media coverage atm because of the American elections...this is just awful on so many levels...if we were watching a movie, with a world deadly virus and seeing images of mass slaughtering of animals because of virus mutation, we’d be appalled and we’d also find it unbelievable, that it could never happen ....but it is happening, though ...that mink are still being farmed for their fur as well is pretty unbelievable when there is so much reference and thought atm to ‘essential’ and ‘non essential’ for human needs...it’s not an essential to farm mink, it’s an industry that has no place...

...apparently there are already over 200 people who have contracted the ‘new strain’ in Denmark..so would presumably be immune from any current vaccine developments..and it only took one person to contract the strain that is halting the whole world right now and killing industry...it all started with a rule of one...it’s just staggering that this new strain is now ‘out there’ and that non diseased animals are also being culled...all mink are being culled ‘to be on the safe side’ of transmitting a disease that wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for human...where will it all end...if we continue to and continue to and continue to etc...

Cherie 07-11-2020 08:17 AM

i didn’t think there was still an appetite for Mink fur, horrendous

The World Health Organisation is looking into biosecurity at mink farms following the decision by Denmark to cull all 17 million mink on the country’s fur farms because a mutated version of coronavirus has spread to people who work on them.

The WHO’s coronavirus technical chief Maria van Kerkhove told a briefing in Geneva on Friday that transmission of the virus between animals and humans was ‘a concern,’ but added that mutations are normal and have been tracked since the beginning of the pandemic, Reuters reported on Friday.

The Netherlands is the third biggest mink farming nation in the world.

Health minister Hugo de Jonge told MPs on Wednesday the cabinet does not have any indications that the virus has mutated in the same way here, but the farm ministry has not yet replied to DutchNews.nl questions about the implications for the Netherlands.

DutchNews.nl has asked the ministry if similar measures are likely in the Netherlands, given that there are proven examples of mink to human transmission here and if the Dutch authorities have been in contact with Danish officials about the sort of mutation.

Denmark says the cull, and an immediate regional lockdown are necessary to minimise the risk of the new form of the virus taking hold.

The mutation has been found in 214 people in the north of the country and, Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen has said there are serious concerns that the mutated virus may risk the effectiveness of a future vaccine.

Coronavirus was first established on mink farms in the Netherlands in the early spring and has now spread to 69 of the 110 fur farms in the country. The most recent infection, in Sevenum, was confirmed earlier this week.

So far farm minister Carola Schouten has resisted calls for a mass cull of all mink on Dutch fur farms, even though scientists said in September that at least 66 fur farm workers and their family members have been infected with coronavirus.

The team used genome sequencing to trace the spread of the virus between mink, cats and humans and found that 66 people and 11 cats all had a ‘mink variety’ of the virus.

Fur trade

At the time, virologist Marion Koopmans told the Volkskrant that she could not rule out fur trade having a role in the spread of the virus to humans in China. ‘It could be a plausible point in the route which virus has followed as it moved from bats to humans,’ she told the paper. ‘This could be one of the links we are still missing.’

Coronavirus has also been found in mink on fur farms in Spain and the US. German research also suggested that the transmission of the virus from animal to human in China, where it originated, may be due to to raccoon dogs, which are bred for their fur.

Despite Dutch government has decided, however, that the Dutch fur industry will be phased out this year, when the current pups are gassed for their fur during the winter.

WHO is looking into this more closely now

user104658 07-11-2020 11:29 AM

Just to point out... these are fur farm animals that are killed for their fur early in their lives regardless. Every last one of 'em.

It may seem more barbaric just because they're killing a huge number all at once - but it's actually BETTER for the animals that they do it all now and cancel the industry, rather than continuing to breed more.
