Nurse charged with murder over baby deaths at Cheshire hospital...

A nurse has been charged with eight counts of murder and 10 counts of attempted murder in connection with baby deaths at a hospital in Cheshire.

Lucy Letby, 30, is due to appear at Warrington Magistrates' Court on Thursday, a spokesman for Cheshire police said.

A statement from the force said Letby had been charged following an ongoing investigation into a number of baby deaths and non-fatal collapses on the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

The statement said: "The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised Cheshire Police to charge a healthcare professional with murder in connection with an ongoing investigation into a number of baby deaths at the Countess of Chester Hospital.

"Lucy Letby, of Arran Avenue, Hereford, is facing eight charges of murder and 10 charges of attempted murder. The charges relate to the period of June 2015 to June 2016.

"The 30-year-old was re-arrested on Tuesday, 10 November, and has since subsequently been charged.

"She has been held in custody and is due to appear at Warrington Magistrates' Court on Thursday, 12 November."

On Tuesday, police said parents of all the babies involved were being kept fully updated on developments and were supported by officers.

Detectives launched an investigation into infant deaths at the hospital in May 2017, initially looking at the deaths of 15 babies between June 2015 and June 2016.

The probe later widened to the deaths of 17 babies and 16 non-fatal collapses between March 2015 and July 2016.

Ms Letby worked at the unit as a student nurse during three years of training before qualifying as a children's nurse at the University of Chester in 2011. She said she started working at the unit after graduating.

Terrifying.
Even just what's known at this point is heartbreaking.

You've got to be one evil bastard to do something like that imo.

I can't even began to understand what kind of a disturbed and evil mind a person would have to have to want to hurt a baby (multiple babies) like that. I can't get my head around this case, it's just sickening

Kizzy 12-11-2020 09:05 AM

The article states very little about what she's meant to have done ... very odd

Yeah, I was wondering that too, it must have been something to do with medication otherwise they would have noticed a lot sooner than a possible 18 babies either dead or attempted?

...she was arrested before but not charged for whatever reason...this time though, she has been charged so there must be things that have come to light which will surface at the trial...

...this is all I can find from the previous reports of this and her last arrest...

Police launched a probe into the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital in May last year — and have now revealed they are investigating the deaths of 17 babies and 15 non-fatal collapses.
The hospital trust raised the alarm itself following the high number of fatalities between March 2015 and July 2016.
Doctors launched an internal inquiry after finding the premature babies had collapsed with heart and lung failure but were unusually impossible to resuscitate.

A report later found the babies developed strange blotches on their arms and legs after death.
Experts could not find a cause of death and police were called in to investigate in 2017.

That makes it sound like it was some sort of drug/medication because of the reactions and the inability to resuscitate. Those poor babies and their families too, it must be horrific enough for your baby to die but to find out this now as well

...yeah, my niece and her partner lost a child recently because he was born early and sadly, couldn’t survive...the grief of something like that is just heart rendering...but to have someone deliberately taking your perfectly healthy child from you and taking their one life away...?...horrendous beyond words...

LaLaLand 12-11-2020 09:29 AM

So awful, and to think it’s literally just up the road from me. I know people, friends of mine, who had kids there during the time she was doing this (allegedly). Terrifying.

Absolutely awful, a friend of mine had a baby 3 months ago actually and he was in the neonatal unit for a week, you're putting your child's life in those staffs hands and you do trust them completely, it makes it so much worse

Kizzy 12-11-2020 09:56 AM

She's been there since 2011, I'm sure theres some reason for her to be suspected but in this article there's nothing but good things about her :/

We recently watched the programme about Beverley Allitt....and you could almost compare it to the Harold Shipman case where alarm bells are not triggered until death rates become high. Only at this point did they investigate and find high levels of insulin in the victims of Allitt and Morphine in the victims of Shipman...

This girl looks like butter wouldnt melt in her mouth...to lose a child is one thing...to find out years later that they were murdered must be truly devastating.

This story has made me feel sick, it is beyond evil. The fact someone is capable to do that is really scary.

Yes ... these cases totally bewilder me .

If she’s found guilty of even one attempted murder of a baby I’d lock her away forever ..
