Javier Mascherano puts an end to his professional career immediately. The Argentinian record international handed in his contract with his club Estudiantes de La Plata on Sunday.

The 36-year-old Mascherano made his decision known through a press conference. The reason for his early retirement has not been reported. Mascherano still had a contract until mid-2021 with the Argentinian Estudiantes de La Plata.

Mascherano caused a furore as a defensive midfielder and has been Argentinian record international since 2018 with 148 international matches. He played for Liverpool for two years before earning a transfer to FC Barcelona in 2010.
