Elliott Page comes out as Transgender

Oliver_W 01-12-2020 05:05 PM

Didn't she come out as nonbinary a year or two ago?

I imagine that was a first step forward to finding out more about themselves

Captain.Remy 01-12-2020 05:19 PM

Congrats, that's so tough to do.
Hope Elliot will be able to deal with the negative comments, because obviously some people have this weird thing of writing nasty comments on social media instead of moving on.
I know Elliot will receive a lot of support too though!

Black Dagger 01-12-2020 05:21 PM

Hope he carries on thriving in life. I adore him.

Not gonna lie I saw this earlier but never knew who he used to be but I saw him on the news and I'm so happy for him, I remember how outspoken they were a few years ago and how much his words will have helped others

Mystic Mock 01-12-2020 06:16 PM

I'm not gonna lie it's gonna be ****ing weird to think of him playing Vanya in a potential season 3 of The Umbrella Academy considering that character is meant to be female.:joker:

He is definitely gonna have to ignore comments on the Internet though.

Considering the number of major trans characters played by cis actors in recent years (Jeffrey Tambor in Transparent, Jared Leto in Dallas Buyers Club, Eddie Redmayne in the Danish Girl), it's pretty fair and overdue for the tables to be turned :p

Jessica. 01-12-2020 06:38 PM

Bless him for coming out in adulthood and while his career has been going so well. I hope he ends up super happy, his wife seems supportive which is great.

Yeah, I think it's weirder for cis people to play trans characters. :joker:

Braden 01-12-2020 07:05 PM

I hope he lives a happy life

I can’t stop laughing at people on Twitter thinking it’s Elaine Page :joker:

****, you're both right, of course I should have said he, and yeah I've heard of people using nonbinary identities as a "stepping stone" for being trans.

Best of luck to him :)

To be fair, it's a show about time travel and super powers. It has a 50+ year old bloke who looks like a school boy. There are multiple ways they could change Vanya's gender... Either literally by supernatural means, or simply by having the character be trans. Or he might not be bothered about playing a female character. I'd assume they might consult him on his wishes.

Kizzy 01-12-2020 09:13 PM

Well they're old enough to make they're own mind up who or what they want to be I guess.

Yeah this , it's going to be strange Calling them Elliot from now on . But atleast he's a grown adult .

What I don't agree with however is pubity blockers being prescribed to kids :umm2::crazy:
, Just seen itv news where a few kids regret going through that experience.

Nicky91 02-12-2020 01:53 PM

congrats and ignore social media for a while would also be my advice

ok now the controversial part (and pls don't call me transphobic cuz i'm not) it feels weird how now one of my fave video game characters (Beyond: Two Souls's Jodie, absolutely adore playing that game too btw) is transgender

i wish him all the luck in the world though, and i hope he doesn't get too much nasty hate comments

Tom4784 02-12-2020 01:57 PM

When it comes to the Umbrella Academy, I suppose they'll probably have him play Vanya as a woman if he's comfortable for an episode or two until they can write it in.

If not, the show is about time travel and Season 3 looks to be about the butterfly effects of it, they could easily just say that one of the changes in the timeline is that Vanya's male in the new timeline.

Yeah there was a court case recently where a woman sued Tavistock and Portman NHS Trust over this

Elliot Page will continue to play the role of Vanya Hargreeves in “The Umbrella Academy,” the Netflix series about a family of superheroes that’s become one of the streaming service’s biggest hits.

Vanya is a cisgender woman whose superpower involves unleashing force through the use of sound. There are no plans to change the character’s gender, insiders told Variety.

Page, star of films such as “Juno” and the X-Men series, announced he is a gender non-binary transgender person in a heartfelt social media message on Tuesday. Page’s credited name has already been updated on “The Umbrella Academy’s” IMDB page.

Netflix is also in the process of updating Page’s name in the metadata across all titles he is involved with that are available to watch on the streaming service, another insider said. Those changes should start to be reflected throughout Tuesday.

Quite right too, hormones being pushed on kids is ridiculous.

Ammi 02-12-2020 02:08 PM

...is the Umbrella Academy a good/worthwhile watch...?...

Tom4784 02-12-2020 02:08 PM

I'm in two minds when it comes to trans kids transitioning. There are examples of kids transitioning and leading happier lives for it, like Kim Petras, but the one thing that doesn't get spoken about much is that a lot of grown adults do end up regretting transitioning so if a grown adult that knows their own mind and has considered transitioning for years ends up regretting it, can kids make that decision for themselves?

I think where I settle on the issue is that, in some cases, kids should be allowed to transition but it has to be on a case by case basis. I don't think it should be particularly common since I don't think many kids have the capacity to make such impactful decisions at a young age, but it should happen in some cases, I think.

I think trans kids should probably spend their childhood seeing what works and what doesn't before they commit to a full transition. I don't think it's a process to be rushed into.

I have a question. If you take it as offensive then that's your problem, because it's not meant in any offensive way.

Just to clear this up for me, so that I can understand.

I assume that the girlfriend is bi? Because if she was gay, wouldn't that cause a bit of a problem in their relationship?

Well quite. Should be easy for them to work it into the storyline, assuming he doesn't want to continue playing a woman. Which may not be an issue anyway as..well actors are acting. They don't necessarily need the 'life experience' or actually having to be the exact same as a character in every way, or whatever in order to play a role. Else we would be paying serial killers and such fortunes to star in films!

But the amount of 'omg what will happen to Vanya?!?!' stuff I have seen on FB today is just insane. Not exactly the hardest circle to square here..they could do a few different things (especially given how the show is, I mean, they could even just have him randomly turning male when going through a portal or something!), depending on what the actor wants.

She would identify as bi (or pan, but whatever  ), if they stay together, yeah.

Stylistically and sheer fun-wise, yes... storywise... no. Don't go into it expecting things to make sense, because they take a lot of liberties with the plot and character development.

I agree with that(ish), I don't think the storyline doesn't make sense but it's a show to watch because it's fun/stylish more than "hard hitting". The second season found its stride more than the first, IMO. I suspect partly because it clearly had a significantly higher budget.

If it was you who just changed the title from Elliot to a dead name, Alf, that's a pretty tasteless thing to do

Then again, I'd expect no less from a forum (and indeed a country) where transphobia is rampant

All because he found people not finding Katie Hopkins' funny "abusive".

I'll never understand why someones personal gender identity is such a point of contention to some people
