Alf's top 40 countdown of the greatest footballers of all time.
 

I'm gonna do this soon, I just need to do a little bit more research. And it's not gonna be from all time as the title suggests, I'm gonna do it from 1950 to the present day. Pre war stuff is hard to judge, not as much information.

Ledley King number 1

I liked Ledley, great defender, very unlucky with injuries in his career. Could have been an England regular even with Ferdinand and Terry about.

This is a difficult list to compile.

Gonna be interesting to see what order you put the big four in - Messi, Pele, Maradona and Ronaldo. I'm curious to see where you put the other Ronaldo. He was the best pure striker I've ever seen. Also, Zidane, Pirlo, Van Basten, Baresi, Maldini, Shearer, Gascoine, Zlatan etc. These are among the best players I've ever seen. Its going to be interesting to see who is left out.

Diego is 1. The rest is up for debate.

I will settle the Messi vs Ronaldo debate, once and for all.

I will be judging players what they did in their era's. What they won, how influential was they, their reputations/legends, their individual as well as team statistics and footage I've seen of them.

That means theres gonna be a load of Man Utd players. Ryan Giggs has to make it on that criteria. His name was not my mind when I think of top 40 of all time.

Not necessarily so. While Giggs was a great player, he wasn't the most influencial player in the team, he was one of them, but not the most.

I don't know my list yet, but I can say with certainty that as good a player Giggs was, he won't make this list.

He is the only goalkeeper to make the list, which would make him The greatest keeper of all time.

I did consider Buffon, Schmeichel, Kahn, Zoff and Banks, but too many keepers means less outfield players.

Clearly you lost all credibility by leave out Clemence
