What do you do when you see a Magpie?

https://nas-national-prod.s3.amazona...?itok=NXkKf7Kb

I say "Morning Mr Magpie, hope you had a nice fly"

this buys me time to escape as the Magpie is actually the DEVIL

It was said that at the Magpie represent the Devil, as when Jesus was crucified on the cross, both a Dove and a Magpie came to sit on the cross.

I immediately look for another one. One for sorrow two for joy etc.

If it’s on it’s own I say “good morning mr magpie, where’s your wife”
If there’s two of them I just say “good morning me magpie”

AnnieK 28-12-2020 04:52 PM

Salute, say good morning mr magpie, touch black then white then nearly crash the car looking for a second. I'm horribly superstitious about magpies even though the song was only created for a stupid kids tv show :hmph:

Spot it, acknowledge it and then continue my current task/operation/action and ignore it.

I normally look around for its mate.

I birdwatcher once told me when I said I didn't care for Magpies.
That I was likely falling for the nonsense about them.

That they mated for life and the times you saw a Magpie on its own outside the nesting time, likely meant it had lost its mate.

So from that sad thought the view that one Magpie was bad luck came into play
When the rhyme even just says one for sorrow.
Which it is for that solo Magpie, not for us.

Then she showed me what she was watching, it was a young Magpie in a tree which the adults had pushed out to get it to learn to get around.
The adults kept flying down to it and pushing it and coaxing it to start moving around.

After a while it hopped about on the ground, the parents always close in attendance watching, ready to protect it.
It was fascinating.

Changed my view on Magpies.

So now if I see one I feel sad for it.
Seeing them in a different light.

The thing I hate most about them is the hassle and distress they bring to smaller birds nesting and their young.

They are just a bird anniek, closely related to dinosaurs

They are attracted to shiny objects, they are very intelligent because you don’t ever really see dead ones.
