PGA strips major golf championship from Donald Trump's Bedminster course

The PGA of America has announced that it has moved the 2022 PGA Championship from Donald Trump’s Bedminster course in the wake of the invasion of the US Capitol.

“The PGA of America Board of Directors voted tonight to exercise the right to terminate the agreement to play the 2022 PGA Championship at Trump Bedminster,’’ said Jim Richerson, president of the PGA of America.

Bedminster, located in New Jersey, had been awarded the tournament in 2012, before Trump’s run for the presidency. It was the first time one of his courses had been chosen to host a men’s major although Bedminster hosted the women’s PGA in 2017.

The tournament is due to be played in May 2022, and alternative venues include Bethpage Black, Southern Hills and Valhalla.

“We find ourselves in a political situation not of our making,’’ said Seth Waugh, the CEO of the PGA of America, in an interview with the Associated Press. “We’re fiduciaries for our members, for the game, for our mission and for our brand. And how do we best protect that? Our feeling was given the tragic events of Wednesday that we could no longer hold it at Bedminster. The damage could have been irreparable. The only real course of action was to leave.”
The Trump Organization said they were disappointed with the decision. “This is a breach of a binding contract and they have no right to terminate the agreement,” a spokesperson told ABC on Sunday. “As an organization we have invested many, many millions of dollars in the 2022 PGA Championship at Trump National Golf Club, Bedminster. We will continue to promote the game of golf on every level and remain focused on operating the finest golf courses anywhere in the world.”

Trump owns one other possible major venue: Turnberry in Scotland, which has hosted The Open on four occasions. The R&A says Turnberry is still in the rotation for the tournament, although it has not hosted The Open since 2009.

“Turnberry is one of the 10 courses,” said the R&A chief executive, Martin Slumbers, in 2020. “We’ve talked about this many times in terms of it being part of the pool of courses, nothing’s changed from the previous points and comments that I’ve made on that in respect to talking The Open there. But it’s absolutely one of the pool of courses.”

Trump is facing impeachment in his final days in power after inciting a violent mob to invade the Capitol on Wednesday. He has regularly strayed into the world of sport during his presidency, attacking athletes who knelt during the national anthem in protest at racial injustice. On Sunday, it emerged he intends to award the presidential medal of freedom to New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

the more Sports become politically involved in things the more their TV ratings drop drastically, just look at the NBA, NFL and Nascar, it should be played there and then they should not use it in the future after the event if they feel that way.

It's a change of location because they don't want to give money to the guy who tried to bring down democracy, it's not actually using the tournament to send a political message like taking the knee or wearing poppies etc

What did Nascar do politically btw?

they agreed to play it there and Trump hasn't been charged of anything as of yet and probably won't be

the whole Bubba Wallace thing in Nascar where they found a noose in his garage but it was actually a handle and the investigation from the FBI came to nothing, Nascar made a big deal out of it before the investigation and took the knee and paraded him in front of the field before races and they removed guidelines for standing for the national anthem

It doesn't really matter if he's ever charged with anything, everyone heard his own words, he riled those people up, he suggested people marched to Capitol Hill on the 6th which they did and 4 people are dead now. Whether he faces charges for inciting that or not, that happened in plain sight.

If viewership drops because nazis are offended and refuse to tune in then that's no loss.

It's a smart business decision.

So petty, they will pay out of their pockets for this decision .

Nascar is watched heavily by republicans and southern states at the end of the day that is the core of their viewership and it can't survive without them it has nothing to do with being Nazis or not, NBA ratings i'm more surprised about but they have dropped massively, it might be no loss to people who don't care about sports but its a huge loss for these different Sports especially during these times when investment and money is needed
