The Queen's Gambit (Netflix miniseries)

I searched for the subject on the forum and could only find passing mentions of it in other threads, so figured I'd make one just for it (sorry if there already is one; blame the search feature)

Anyone been binging this? There're only seven episodes and they're mostly 45mins~ so it's not that much of a trek to get through... but I've just bulldozed through three of them and it's pretty fantastic!

I'd assumed Anya Taylor-Joy was in something huge and mainstream because I immediately recognised her but couldn't place where... turns out it was from the BBC's adaptation of "The Miniaturist" a few Christmases back, in which she was just as good

not usually my sort of thing but only heard great things about it so may give it a go, cast seems alright as well, the actress is good as Gina in Peaky Blinders

...I binged it a few months ago, I think it was...it’s one of the best recent series I’ve seen...it might be the first time I’ve seen Anya Taylor-Joy, she’s a gorgeous actress.....

Yeah watched it some time back, it was good but not the best I have watched recently

The Serpent and Succession were better in my view

Ammi 14-01-2021 06:50 AM

...I did look for Succession but I don’t think it’s on any of my channels...

Excellent series, watched it a couple of months ago! Loved how they portrayed the era and the music they used.

Yeah watched this a couple of months ago, I got through it very fast, It was really addictive and I don't even know why

Watched episode four earlier.

Spoiler:

Poor Alma :( such an interesting character, full of sadness and acted beautifully... something about her eyes just tugged at my heartstrings with every piano performance or Gibson poured.

The only thing I would say is a little "missing" from this is that the adversaries in the chess world are so numerous and somewhat bland, that it doesn't feel like there's much of a "challenge" to overcome for the protagonist; it feels very much like they were an afterthought, and they rushed together a few long glances between each other for a bit of romantic intrigue instead. The only one I've remembered so far is the Russian kid who wants to go to a drive-in

It is a really good series. Probably one of the best from the last year.

In the earlier episodes :

Spoiler:

When she was in the orphanage I kept expecting something horrible to happen to her there, that she'd be abused or some thing, that's a terrible thing to think but it's clearly because that's almost what you expect to hear from places like, that's a bad state of affairs

and in a similar way (this is later episodes)

Spoiler:

I found it hard to believe that all her male opponents were such gracious losers and so nice to her, I think in real life back then she would have faced much more sexism and struggles in trying to enter such a male dominated world

But I did love it and in a way it was also nice that that stuff didn't happen
