I can’t see how their business has been affected so much in the pandemic looks like they are using it though?

[British Gas engineers have begun a five-day strike
from Thursday in a dispute over new contracts.
Thousands of staff have walked out in response
to an attempt by the firm to push through
pay cuts by threatening to fire workers, union GMB said.
It accused Centrica owner British Gas of provoking the strike.
Centrica said it had done everything it could to avoid a strike,
adding it would prioritise vulnerable households
and emergencies during the walkout.
Justin Bowden, GMB national secretary,
said: "GMB members from Land's End
to John O'Groats have stayed home,
stayed safe and supported the first
national gas strike in a decade.

"The months and months of fire and rehire pay cut threats
from British Gas CEO Chris O'Shea have
provoked thousands and thousands of GMB engineers
and call centre staff to strike,

the only option left to them by a business that
made £901m operating profit
yet still plans to sack them because they
won't accept the scale of cuts it demands," he added.

Some British Gas workers have taken to
social media to voice their support for the strike.]

It's a loophole; if you were supposed to be able to make sweeping contract changes like this then it would just be possible to do so. Fire and re-hire to force a contract change should be illegal. They used it as a threat multiple times when I worked for a ****ty large company but never actually pulled the trigger because the threat was always enough to get most people to sign. They got 99% of employees to sign away their 1.5x overtime with that crap. I kept mine until the day I left :hee:. They'd already used the same trick to get everyone to sign away their 1.5x Sundays but that was about 6 months before I started so I never had those in the first place. Sigh.

Well done you

for Signing.

I didn't sign Arista, I kept my overtime multiplier. They intimidated the vast majority into signing, tried again with those of us who didn't for a few more months, and then it was rarely mentioned again. It did come up once or twice; usually if there was a change of senior management... But they had moved on to other concerns and didn't really care much.

Something I'd always be against and would want made illegal to do.

That's a pretty sick kind of normal in my view.

["British Gas disgrace" is the headline on
the Daily Mirror's front page,

refused to accept new contracts on
lower pay have been sacked.
The paper calls it a "fire and rehire scandal"

setting fire to his contract.]

Fire and Hire again under less pay contract
is now going around supermarkets
and all other firms.

They Blame Covid

How have supermarket profits been hit by covid, being the only shops opened for months plus panic buying early on, it’s a mystery

Yes some Supermarkets have done well.
But some Big Supermarkets like Tesco
are now restructuring.
Most take a pay cut, or someone else takes their job.

supermarkets are saying that it cost a fortune to make everything covid safe

Yes how clever of them.

Oliver_W 18-04-2021 04:42 PM

Maybe they should "fire and rehire" the fatcats and paper-pushers rather than the people who do actual work?

No the High Up
are safe
as they take all the choices

Meanwhile in China
they have a rebound
as all workers took pay cuts
as so many are ready to take their place.

And of Course the Slaves
Evil China is using
(Former Strict Muslims)
