candidates:

on the left

Marisa Matias - Candidate for the far-left party BE. A MEP (member of the EU parliament) standing for social justice and the environment.

João Ferreira - Candidate for the communist party PCP. After their candidate flopped massively 5 years ago, this time they went for fresh telegenic attractive young man who is a MEP, Focusing on workers' rights

Ana Gomes - Independent candidate who is a member of the ruling socialist party PS, but has beef with the current leadership so they did not endorse her. Endorsed by 2 small green parties, PAN and Livre. A career diplomat who had an important role in bringing independence to East Timor, later became a MEP for PS. Known and respected for being outspoken against corruption, her bid was born from a grassroots campaign, but hasn't really taken off to become a serious threat to the current President.

on the centre

Tino de Rans - wants to call himself ''people's candidate'' has no political experience, a former reality show contestant

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa - The 72 year old incumbent President since 2016 and a very respected Constitutional Law professor and former TV pundit. Running both times as an independent, supported by the classical center-right parties, PSD (which he used to lead, decades ago) and CDS, as well as implicitly by the Prime-Minister António Costa and much of the PS, despite coming from the rightist camp. Well-liked by the overwhelming majority of the population due to his closeness to the people, but criticized by some on the right for being too supportive of the current government. could easily be re-elected

on the right

Tiago Mayan Gonçalves - A lawyer whom was chosen to be the candidate for the liberal party IL. Trying to fill the void for those who feel Marcelo nudged too far to the left, but small-government liberalism is just not a very popular ideology in a rather poor country like Portugal.

André Ventura - Former TV football pundit turned populist politician, currently riding a wave of discontent against "the system". Leader, founder and candidate for the Chega party, a one-man show. Running on an anti-poor, anti-minority and anti-crime platform, despite being currently investigated for corruption by the police himself. Backed by the usual basket of racists and xenophobes, as well as people who resent the President and the hapless center-right opposition for not being forceful enough against the government. Has pledged to resign if he finishes below Ana Gomes, a promise he's unlikely to keep.
highest turnout in these elections so far since 2006

[The moderate incumbent candidate is widely
seen as the sure winner.
But an intriguing question for many Portuguese is how
well a brash new populist challenger fares
in the ballot. Mainstream populism is a novelty in Portugal]

So no Change for Jess.

He was beloved by the older generation with a spot on TV where he dumbed down politics for like 20 years, they just got out of a dictatorship in the 70's so most of the older generation just trust him even though he's not a Saint, it's a case of "better the devil you know". He's predictable and that's what they want in the times of uncertainty.
