Thorntons: Chocolate maker to close all UK shops

[Chocolate maker Thorntons has said none
of its stores will reopen after
coronavirus lockdowns are lifted.
The decision to close its 61 shops will
put more than 600 jobs at risk.

The company said it had been badly hit
by the pandemic, which forced its stores
to shut their doors during the crucial
Christmas and Easter holidays.
"The obstacles we have faced and will
continue to face on the High Street
are too severe," said Thorntons
retail director Adam Goddard.]

Digital chocolates aren’t as tasty

GoldHeart 15-03-2021 06:28 PM

Before we know it they'll hardly be any retail shops on the streets, this is sad as people are once again losing their jobs .

Amy Jade 15-03-2021 08:20 PM

they're still online and will undoubtedly stay in shops and supermarkets so I understand really

Ammi 15-03-2021 08:34 PM

...we haven’t had a Thornton’s shop open anywhere near us for a long time, I can’t recall the last time I saw one...we used to have a Thornton’s cafe in town but it closed down a few years ago...I had thought they were already online only...but that’s very sad, though...61 stores is an awful lot of job losses...this really is all going to accelerate the end of the high street, I fear......

Toy Soldier 15-03-2021 08:44 PM

I would imagine their high street stores were never huge profit drivers and may well have mainly kept open for brand recognition... They'll obviously sell exist but just as a manufacturer target than that + retail.

But yeah with physical retail and the service sector dying, and manufacturing increasingly automated, there simply isn't going to be enough unskilled labour to go around pretty soon. UBI is going to become an inevitability.

Jay28jay2 15-03-2021 08:52 PM

I’ll miss their chocolate fountains

Dogeatdog 15-03-2021 09:43 PM

Very sad for those that will be losing their jobs. ):

bitontheslide 15-03-2021 10:11 PM

there are going to be an awful lot of similar cases come the summer. The whole shopping and working dynamic has changed and it will never return as it was
