Norhern Ireland assembly to be recalled over loyalist violence

[The Northern Ireland Assembly is to be
recalled early from its Easter break
on Thursday to discuss the violence
in some loyalist areas.
A petition tabled by the Alliance Party to
bring MLAs back to the chamber has
secured the 30 signatures required.

41 police officers have been injured as
a result of the violence in parts of
greater Belfast and Londonderry,
with ten arrests made to date.

Detectives are also investigating
parades in Portadown and
Markethill on Monday.
Politicians are united in calling for the
violence to end,
but are divided over why it has erupted.]

"Some have linked the violence in parts of greater Belfast and Londonderry in recent days to the decision by the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) not to prosecute anyone who attended the funeral of former IRA man Bobby Storey in June 2020.

It was attended by 2,000 mourners - including Deputy First Minister Michelle O'Neill - at a time when Covid restrictions were in place.

The leaders of the DUP, UUP and TUV have called for Mr Byrne to resign over the PSNI's handling of the funeral."

Why was IRA criminal Bobby Storey's funeral so controversial?

Interesting top comment from DT on this subject:

Before the usual suspects completely rewrite the history of the protocol....Lets be clear
the entire protocol was contrived by the EU to frustrate Brexit, It was manufactured to
create precisely what we are seeing now.

They fabricated this issue deliberately and with a callas disregard for the very real
problems that everyone in this country knew it would create.

If the troubles do erupt again, every death and injury will be entirely the fault of the EU.

There was never going to be a solution that wasn't going to cause issues though to do with the NI Border

There's a good reason?

I wouldn't presume to engage you in a conversation about the Troubles.

Crimson Dynamo 08-04-2021 11:54 AM

the "rioters" as ever are all young teenage boys

do the parents of these boys never take responsibility?

bots 08-04-2021 11:58 AM

rioting is just wrong, full stop, whatever the reason

Oh? Why not? Are you afraid I might make excuses for bombings and violence?

Cherie 08-04-2021 12:13 PM

This is very sad to see, 23 years since the GF agreement, there is a whole generation who have grown up living in peace, these appear to be in the main young kids who probably have a rosy tinted view of what living through the troubles was like, I don't agree that funeral should have attracted the crowds that it did, and at the very least fines should have been handed down to the key players, and I really don't know why this didn't happen, that said some of these idiots don't need an excuse and are ready to kick off at any perceived insult

Well that's the thing isn't it?, if people not getting fined for breaking covid rules causes this kind of a reaction, that really doesn't bode well for the future of NI and you're right it is such a shame after it had calmed down so much there, it's so sad to see
