i'm fine with it as long as competition remains

user104658 18-05-2021 08:24 PM

MGM still owns the Stargate franchise and REFUSES to do anything with it, it's a valuable franchise so if Amazon buy they may well make a new SG series for Prime. I will nerd out all over that ****.

Amazon has agreed to buy the historic
MGM studios for $8.45bn (£5.97bn).

[MGM is one of Hollywood's most famous studios
, having produced classic films such as
Some Like It Hot and Singin' In The Rain.
The sale will give the tech giant's Prime streaming
service access to a huge back catalogue of content.
An Amazon executive said on Wednesday: "It's very
exciting and provides so many opportunities
for high-quality storytelling."

Mike Hopkins, senior vice president of
Prime Video and Amazon Studios, added:
"The real financial value behind this deal
is the treasure trove of Intellectual Property
in the deep catalogue that we plan to re-imagine
and develop together with MGM's talented team."

The deal will boost Amazon Prime Video's offering
with about 4,000 films, including the James Bond franchise
and Legally Blonde, as well as 17,000 television shows
such as the Handmaid's Tale TV series.]

Wonder how much Prime will go up? If you use it for Twitch, Amazon shopping, and Prime Video it's a bargain tbf. I wont mind paying an extra quid or two a month.

A while back I heard that Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin, the producers of the original film, wanted to make a sequel that would ignore the events of SG-1.

On the one hand, it's better than the stinking Rat buying another studio.

But on the other, it's stinking Bezo buying it...

Yes I hope just a pound
in Nov/Dec.

i don't see the prime sub going up because of this, it's too tied in with shopping deliveries for it to be affected.

For the record Bezos has stepped down as Amazon CEO, he has moved on to a higher plane

SG1 was good.

I love Atlantis although it's even sillier than SG-1 at times :joker:. Universe was boring at first but was just hitting its stride and getting good in the second season... and then it got cancelled :idc:.

Fans were pretty peeved though because Atlantis was ended to free up the budget for Universe...

SG-1 was "complete" to be honest, it ran for so long and dealt with all of its villains etc. so there's not a huge amount more that could be done with it. I'd rather a TV show reboot (from the very start including the discovery of the gate, not carrying on from the original film as canon) than a movie sequel, though.

I loved Atlantis too, universe I found a bit harder going, but on going back to it, it improved, and then got cancelled:laugh:

atlantis wasn't so well received ratings wise, which is why they imported the sg1 characters from time to time .... everyone loves Sam

James 27-05-2021 10:47 AM

I think I watched most of SG-1, some of Atlantis and nothing of the rest.

Teal'c vs Ronon was iconic.

It was literally just getting interesting, and then they all jumped in suspended animation pods and were yeeted into the depths of interstellar space.

To be fair though, for a "prematurely cancelled" ending, I thought that was quite imaginative... they literally froze them in time and sent them off into the dark. A good metaphor for an early-cancelled show.

SG-1 is the best of them ultimately, although TBH anyone watching for the first time can safely stop at the end of Season 8. The rest is watchable but really it's bonus content... the show is finished with the defeat of the Goa'uld and Replicators, humans being gifted the Asgardian tech/knowledge, and O'Neill leaving. The two seasons after that, when they took on half the cast of Farscape, are a bit needless despite some fun episodes.
