[Twelve people have died and two children are in
hospital with serious injuries after a cable car
plunged to the ground near Lake Maggiore in northern Italy.
The capsule fell from its cable close to the second last pillar
near the summit of the Mottarone mountain with 15 people on board
at about midday (11am BST) on Sunday,
Italy's mountain rescue service said.]

Tragic.

It needs to be checked more often.

[The cable car service had recently reopened following
the lifting of coronavirus restrictions, Reuters news agency reported.]

…so incredibly tragic, I can’t imagine what everyone there is going through right now…at least one of the children is conscious with their injuries…?…it’s amazing that anyone survived…

Ammi 23-05-2021 02:04 PM

…the Guardian are reporting at least 12 dead with 15 on board at the time…

Yes SkyNews as well.

Kate! 23-05-2021 02:06 PM

terrible news. My heart goes out to all especially the children who may survive and possibly lose parents. X

Any time i have travelled on a cable car i've thought it looked very dodgy, i just don't think they are fundamentally very safe

Horrible way to go

arista 23-05-2021 02:12 PM

Could be the Tension of the cable
as it was left idle
for many months

Any Normal Checking not going on.

Ammi 23-05-2021 02:14 PM

…in a few moments of what would have been a leisure time as well, so many worlds shattered…it’s beyond imagining…

AnnieK 23-05-2021 02:32 PM

How terrifying. Poor people

arista 23-05-2021 03:05 PM

[The cable line was closed in 2014 for a
€4.4 million renovation before opening
again in 2016, and had only reopened
on 24 April after COVID lockdowns forced
the closure of ski lifts across Italy last year.]

13 have now died meaning that it was only 2 children that survived it.

Vanessa 23-05-2021 04:02 PM

This is terrible
I've been in a cable car ages ago when I visited Algeria.
It was bloody terrifying :bawling:

Cherie 23-05-2021 05:17 PM

One was just five he was probably being held and that shielded him, both his parents are probably dead, just awful

I'm not sure, but it was so high.

arista 23-05-2021 06:33 PM

€4.4 million renovation

Thats how much spent on it
2016 it was open again.

So Maybe because of the Covid Gap
something went wrong.

The Car or the Cable
or both.

one of the two children has now died so it leaves the youngest child the only survivor and in a critical condition

Ammi 24-05-2021 05:15 AM

….both children having sustained such extensive injuries …the 9yr old boy sadly died of heart failure, he had multiple fractures…the 5yr old has injuries to head, chest and legs…

…some details about some of the victims… Roberta Pistolato was a doctor working on the frontline of Italy's battle against Covid…she was celebrating her 40th birthday with her boyfriend Angelo Gasparro, 45…

https://i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incomin...-Pistolato.jpg

…an engaged couple Silvia Malnati 27, and Alessandro Merlo, 29, were also killed….

…One family, originally from Israel and living in Italy, lost five members including a two-year-old boy and an 81-year-old grandmother when the car fell…

A terrible tragedy , was it only one car that fell ~ as it seems an awful lot of people in one car.
