Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti's mooted move to Real Madrid is a done deal, according to sources.

The Athletic understands a return to the Spanish capital for the Italian is very close. Everton have arranged a meeting of their board at 3pm on Tuesday to discuss the situation.

Zidane left Real last month after a difficult campaign, which saw them knocked out in the Champions League semi-finals and finished second in La Liga. Ancelotti previously managed the club between 2013 and 2015.

Ancelotti took Everton to 10th in the Premier League last season, missing out on a place in Europe in the process.

Ancelotti joined Real in summer 2013 to replace Jose Mourinho.

Real had been aiming to win their 10th Champions League for over a decade when he arrived. In his first season, he captured the trophy by beating local rivals Atletico Madrid in the final.

Ancelotti became only the second manager to win the trophy on three occasions.

His second season was more difficult. He finished second again but was knocked out in the round of 16 in the Champions League. Real let him go in the summer of 2015.

can't blame anyone for wanting the real madrid job, i think everton and wolves will be fine getting a new manager but spurs and celtic are going to struggle, mainly from the mess their clubs are in.

Tbh the progress he's made with Everton has been fairly modest and some games they looked pretty dire, I wouldn't be too gutted if I were them
