Sweet Tooth

...about half way through the 3rd episode me and my wife said, "...are we watching a kids show?"

And I still can't figure it out, I think maybe yes but also it has people getting their heads smashed in (off camera) and also burned alive (again off camera). And the overall plot is essentially about hunting and harvesting children.

And yet.

It's so gentle & peaceful & sweet & feel-good :hee:. We really enjoyed it, neither of us have been very well this week and it made for really cosy viewing while the kids were at school :joker:.

The cinematography & palette is gorgeous also, which helps. Just some really nice, simple viewing. That only occasionally feels like watching an oddly violent Cbeebies series. About a plague.

It's also sitting at 8.2 on IMDB which is actually quite high for a TV show, I was surprised to be honest, but I guess other people felt the same way as us? Refreshingly NON-gritty.

I watched the first episode earlier in the week and thought it was good but I've not gone back to watch anymore yet.

The comics are less kiddie.

I do have to say, the final line of the first episode was an unfortunate scripting choice :umm2:

Yes I did read that it's essentially following the major story points but has gone in a totally different direction in terms of tone. It does lead to a sort of weird confusion about who the show is for though. Sometimes it totally feels aimed at kids but then you think "but ok... hold on... yes they cut away before showing any graphic violence, but we do still KNOW that one of the main characters is, in this scene, bashing some naughty men's skulls in  "

There's also a bit where some plucky teenage vigilantes just straight up murder some guys with arrows and knives... with a cheeky wink and a smile. I think they call that sociopathy...

I can't recall it tbh.

I got around to watching the second episode. I enjoyed it, it's got a very Pushing Daisies vibe to it.

Yeah I think the oversaturated palette that's been used really adds something - possibly even moreso because a lot of shows and movies these days have a habit of under-saturating "for atmosphere". But I liked the vivid blue rivers and green fields, made it feel like very "summery" viewing.
