Did any body know that the Egyption Pyramids were built before the English Language existed?

Very subjective

The English Language as it is today? Which came about "around" 1474 when William Caxton brought the printing press over to England, and the language standardisation and the prescriptivist debate started.

This is what English Language A2 level has done to me :bored:

Oh, and no I didn't know that

That's very impressive Lauren:thumbs:

I know that the English language is meant to be the hardest to learn, especially where spelling is concerned

There is a little saying:- "I" before "E", except after "C"

So, "Receive" is "E" & then "I", because it is after the letter "C"

If you say, "Friend" then it is the "I" before the "E", because it is not followed by a "C"

But, that isn't always the case:puzzled::puzzled:

Weight, Height, Their, (plenty more)......

and that's the tip of the Ice-berg:wink: nevermind Pyramids of Egypt...

Thank you nodisharmony

I recently had to analyse some text from 1500's and the spellings were completely different. There were runic symbols (no such letter as 's' mid-word, it was a symbol that looked like an 'f'), spellings changed throughout the text, everything was spelled phonetically, and the great vowel shift was only just occurring and so double, and sometimes triple vowels mid-word was rife.

(Actually, allow me this opportunity to ward off anyone planning on doing English Language for A2 levels - it's hell ).

It's nice to know this information off-by-heart anyway! You've impressed a few of us, I'm sure Lauren:wink:

In regards to A2 levels of English, as long as the important exam results are a pass at the end of it all, it will be worth it:thumbs:

I did know that, but didn’t actually realise I knew it until you pointed it out… if that makes sense. The English language has developed over centuries, but even from when it started to develop, it was long after the Egyptian pyramids were built. These were constructed during the Ancient Egyptian civilisation, around 2000/3000 BC – even before the reign of Queen Cleopatra! It’s quite amazing to think about what happened all those thousands of years ago, even before Christ, from whom the timeline we use today has derived…
