How to watch Microsoft’s Windows 11 event
A new version of Windows is on the way

By Tom Warren@tomwarren Jun 24, 2021, 8:00am EDT

Microsoft is hosting a special Windows event later today where we’re expecting the company to unveil Windows 11. Microsoft has been teasing a “next generation” of Windows for months, and a leaked copy of Windows 11 suggests we’re going to see a number of changes during Microsoft’s event today.

Microsoft is expected to focus on new UI improvements to Windows, including a new Start menu, rounded corners, and more simplifications to using Windows 11. We’re also expecting to hear more about a new Windows store that will offer better access to apps, and some multitasking and gaming improvements to Windows 11.

What to expect from Microsoft’s Windows 11 event
The event should run for around 45 minutes, which gives Microsoft enough time to talk through the important aspects of Windows 11 ahead of a deep dive for developers later today.

WHEN DOES THE WINDOWS 11 EVENT START?
It starts at 11AM ET / 8AM PT / 4PM BST. Following the event, a special developer session will also be available to watch online at 3PM ET.....

I'm watching it, and it looks good providing they dont mess up existing software too much

Gaming is getting a boost and the ability to run Android apps direct on your PC is a nice addition

yes i got that too, i also quite like it

not that i would go for W11, i am still happy with the current W10 pro

also microsoft Chredge keeps updating itself which i also like, today it had refreshed MSN (new tab page) i noticed just now because it first took me to the main MSN search page, but when i clicked another time on tab it brought me back to news page

user104658 24-06-2021 09:37 PM

Don’t upgrade for a year unless they force it. If it isn’t riddled with bugs for the first year, it’ll be the first version of Windows to achieve that. You’re basically beta-testing it for them.

cheered too soon i guess, the weather/news app kinda got stuck, had to reboot the computer just now, and i have manually disabled this app now

user104658 25-06-2021 07:25 AM

Oh also yes, YUCK to the weather widget on the start bar. Just yuck. Hopefully not a sign of things to come - start bar as clean as possible, please! I’m not even a fan of the new start menu since windows 8, the smaller/cleaner/simpler windows 7 start menu was a far better UI.

I got used to it and using the search function for most things, and Windows 10 has been MOSTLY a very good OS after the disaster that was Windows 8, but I’m not a fan of their general trajectory with some of these things.

It’s a computer desktop, not a phone Home Screen. No more widgets, Microsoft.

user104658 25-06-2021 07:28 AM

Oh and don’t get me STARTED on Windows 10 “in S mode”!

“Hey, would you like a crippled laptop that won’t let you run anything except a browser and Microsoft Office, with no discernible benefits? Welcome to S mode!”

i have a very recent state of the art PC and it failed the windows 11 health check :skull:

What you need to do is enable PTT in the bios and then it will be ready when the big day comes

When I tried that it said it failed due to lack of TPM 2.0, and when I went to enable it in BIOS it gave a rather confusing message about potentially wiping data so I didn't do it.

user104658 26-06-2021 11:40 AM

Here is the issue; TMP 2.0 is hardware, and was only released in 2019 and this is a motherboard feature. What this means is, you can have a literally top of the line 2020 PC in terms of CPU, GPU, Ram, nvme SSD’s… the works… but if your motherboard is a 2018 or earlier model, it’s not going to have TMP 2.0.

It will also be the case for many still-high-spec laptops; e.g. a 2018 gaming laptop with an i7 and GTX1080, still worth easily over £1000, and far superior specs wise to any crappy 2021 Celeron laptop, is not going to run it. But the crappy £350 2021 laptop will. Probably badly because they barely run Win10 but anyway.

I think it’s a mistake, the vast majority of PC’s currently in operation are going to have pre-2019 motherboards… especially in the international market. Motherboards and processors only really need upgrading ever 4 years or so - even for high end gaming. GPU upgrades are the only thing that needs to be done frequently to stay “top of line”.

In another 2 or 3 years it’ll be fine. I think it’s going to be an issue if the release is within the next year.

If you really want to do it but are worried about data, you can literally remove your main drive while you do it as a precaution. It’s a BIOS feature and you’ll be able to switch it on with your hard drive safe and sound in another room.

bots 26-06-2021 11:49 AM

it is going to be problematic. The issue seems to be causing confusion because, my motherboard doesnt have a tpm 2 ... however, my processor has a firmware version of tpm 2 and on intel that is satisfied by enabling PTT on amd chips its called AMD fTPM configuration. Again enabling that should do the trick.

I wasn't given any warnings about deleting data, and i think it would only be a problem if you were already encrypting data on a drive because this will effectively replace a software based key with a hardware version, making existing data unreadable

user104658 26-06-2021 12:13 PM

Hmm, in theory it’s not going to be an issue for the vast majority of casual users and actual IT professionals will know what they’re doing. Switching it on, that is, I still think the number of people with incompatible hardware that are not ready to upgrade yet will be.

The hardware that’s out there is going to be an issue; MS going to have to continue supporting Windows 10 for a long time. For reference… the NHS is only just managing to drag the last few heaving old machines over from Internet Explorer to Edge/Chrome .

Hell as recently as 5 or 6 years ago the bookies was still on Windows XP - by that time totally unsupported- until it was discovered that they were WIDE open to hackers and finally made the jump to Windows 10.

To further compound issues… there’s a global shortage of the components needed to make new chips. If everyone suddenly is desperate to get their hands on a newer laptop or mobo/cpu for their desktop, it’s going to be Graphics cards/PS5 all over again. Manufacturers will fall way behind demand and tech will fall into a scalpers black hole.

people are already selling tpm 2 modules on ebay for £1300, i checked this morning. The normal price is about £12 :joker:

James 26-06-2021 01:51 PM

I think I'll stick with Windows 10. :hee:

This is the message it shows, by the way.

Notice

Amd ftpm is a hardware tpm 2.0 implementation integrated in amd agesa code for credential storage and key management. The firmware tpm key will be stored in amd agesa code data region once you enable and ftpm and windows[emoji2400] bitlocker for Drive encryption. Please note that when the recovery key is lost or when the bios rom chip is replaced, the system will not boot into the operating system and the data will stay encrypted and cannot be restored.

bots 26-06-2021 02:03 PM

yeah, that message is entirely fine ... i dont encrypt drives, because i don't trust hardware enough, **** happens  If you havent used bitlocker on a drive already it will be absolutely fine

Nicky91 27-06-2021 02:01 PM

ok thank you for explaining, makes sense, i did have a update for xbox companion console yesterday in the microsoft store, maybe that was it then, an upgrade

there's a xbox built into my amd r7 computer, not that i use it but i know it is there

user104658 28-06-2021 07:45 AM

Windows has Xbox Live these days, they’ve pretty much merged the online components of Windows Live and Xbox Live under the one heading now. Mostly because the new Xboxes are essentially just little pre-built gaming PC’s with a proprietary operating system heavily optimised for gaming. The components and system architectures are basically the same as PC at this point so they’re combining a lot of things (cross play, game ownership across systems, Xbox Live).

They’re also phasing out games on the Microsoft Store, making it all XBL (and of course heavily pushing Game Pass).

The weather widget today has a temperature that is 2 degrees lower than what the BBC app reports.
