Germany now more than 80 dead

this isn't your standard type of flood. The water level was up to the top of signposts in the street just to provide some context. This is certainly a weather event

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima visited Valkenburg, flown to Limburg by helicopter immediately after Prinses Amalia's graduation ceremony of her school

There, the army has been brought in to build an emergency bridge over the river Geul after the original bridge was washed away. The Geul itself has been turned into a wild river dozens of metres wide, which has brought muddy water to low-lying parts of the town.

‘We will only see what the damage is when the water has gone down,’ local Anita Auijlen told Dutch media. ‘We had just started painting downstairs and we’ll have to start again.’

In nearby Meerssen, Michel Lillu said the cellar of his home was completely filled with water. Lillu has lived in the town for 27 years and dealt with floods before. ‘It’s not nice, but these things happen,’ he said. ‘And then what do you do, but clear it up?’

(London had 101mm for their recent event)

every town now which is close to the rivers Rijn and/or Maas, are now closely monitoring the situation

PM Mark Rutte had given his sympathies for neighbouring countries as well as willing to help out wherever possible, and has said affected people in Limburg can always contact The Hague to report any damage they have, and they will be helped out very quickly in restoring their homes, without any costs for those people since this officially was called a Disaster by him, and when officially a disaster, there are no costs for restoring damage to homes, cars, or people who need new refrigerators

user104658 16-07-2021 09:13 AM

It’s only going to get worse for the rest of this decade and into the 2030’s. Governments need to be investing heavily in flood defences.

They won’t, of course, they’ll wait until it happens and then bawl “no one could have known!!”.

Emissions data.

And that huge chunk that’s China is largely due to being the manufacturing base for Western consumption.

Crimson Dynamo 16-07-2021 11:23 AM

Analysis this week showed that over a quarter of the Amazon rainforest now emits more carbon than it absorbs.

Most of the emissions are caused by fires, many deliberately set to clear land for beef and
soy production. But even without fires, hotter temperatures and droughts mean the south-
eastern Amazon has become a source of CO2, rather than a sink.

The government of Brazil’s president, Jair Bolsonaro, has been harshly criticised for
encouraging more deforestation, which has surged to a 12-year high, while fires hit
their highest level in June since 2007.

user104658 16-07-2021 11:54 AM

Yes the situation with the Amazon is terrible but it has become “a net contributor” by a thin margin. How people are interpreting that as “all of this is because of the Amazon” I have no idea, when the simple fact is that the #1 contributors to carbon emissions by a mile are the US and Europe.

Imagine being like “Hey this is all your fault! You chopped down the thing that was sucking up all of our carbon emissions :fist: “
