Norwegian women’s beach handball team fined for not wearing bikini bottoms…

…this may be the sport section but I’m not sure or which sub section so I’ll put it here and it can be moved if it’s incorrect…this is the story….

The Norwegian women’s handball team have been fined for wearing shorts instead of bikini bottoms at the European Beach Handball Championships.

The European Handball Federation (EHF), the sport’s governing body, confirmed a €1,500 (£1,295) fine (€150 (£129.50) per player) for “improper clothing”.

Norway’s players wore shorts during a bronze medal match against Spain in Varna, Bulgaria.

And the breach of regulations comes due to the rules specifying that women should wear bikini bottoms when they are competing.

A statement from the governing body read: “The Disciplinary Commission at the Beach Handball EURO 2021 has dealt with a case of improper clothing.

“In the bronze medal game against Spain on Sunday the team of Norway played with shorts that are not according to the Athlete Uniform Regulations defined in the IHF Beach Handball Rules of the Game,” the EHF said in a statement.

While Norway’s Handball Federation (NHF) announced they would pay the fine for their players, also backing their players in a post to the team’s Instagram page.

“We are very proud of these girls who are at the European Championships in beach handball,” read the statement. “They raised their voice and told us that enough is enough.

“We are the Norwegian Handball Federation and we stand behind you and support you. We will continue to fight to change the international regulations for attire, so that players can play in the clothing they are comfortable with.”

While Kare Geir Lio, the head of NHF, earlier told AFP that its players should have “free choice” over their attire: “It should be a free choice within a standardised framework.

“The most important thing is to have equipment that athletes are comfortable with.”

The governing body’s rules state: “Women should wear a bikini where the top should be a tight-fitting sports bra with deep openings at the arms. The bottom must not be more than ten centimeters on the sides.”

While the male players must wear “tight-fitting tank tops” and shorts that are “not too baggy” and “10 centimeters above the kneecap.”

Norway’s Katinka Haltvik also told Norwegian media outlet NRK that the decision to wear shorts instead of bikini bottoms was “very spontaneous” and that they “felt threatened by the regulations”.

“People cheered on us for going in front of several teams and taking the brunt. Not all teams can afford to pay such fines,” Haltvik said. “[Handball] should be an inclusive sport, not an exclusive one.”

…but then this article which would essentially be the same ‘appropriate sportswear, would it not…?…

The simple reason women beach volleyball players wear bikinis at the Olympics…states that bikini bottoms are worn because they’re often preferred and not because they’re required….

it's just petty people who don't have any job satisfaction being ass holes

Niamh. 20-07-2021 12:01 PM

But yeah on this topic, it's a ****ing disgrace, the "appropriate" uniform here seems to be specifically designed for the male gaze rather than the comfort and practicality of the women competing. Is there men's teams? Are they required to wear Budgie Smugglers?

Ammi 20-07-2021 12:01 PM

… Shirts without sleeves and shorts are obligatory for men and tops and bikini bottoms are obligatory for women….only bikini bottoms allowed for females but shorts allowed for males…we sea what they did on the beach there…

Ammi 20-07-2021 12:10 PM

…it’s not just that there’s no requirement for men to wear buddy smugglers but they can be long shorts with just a no longer than 10cm above the knee rule…whereas the ladies can’t wear sport Lycra shorts which do t differ from bikini bottoms anyway but just enough to feel more comfortable …

For gods' saaaaake...

Weren't the Olymics committee also trying to stop black women from wearing certain types of swimcap? If shorts gave people an advantage over bikini bottoms, or if the soul caps gave an aquadynamic advantage (from what little looking into I did, it doesn't) then I could understand, but yeah it doesn't help them so what's the problem?

Meanwhile, a male is allowed to compete in weightlifting against women... Priorities, people!!

Some sports like tennis have a dress code
There is clearly nothing wrong with wearing shorts so all the players need to stand together and refuse to play until it’s a choice

also you don't need to post a thread about beach volleyball here since GB isn't good at that sport anyways, so british people have no interest in this topic

unlike my nation, being good at beach volleyball, volleyball, handball, hockey, every sport where we are amazing at, what isn't being played in GB

This isn't as much about the Sport as it is about fairness and equality to women

the outfits are appropriate towards that type of sport

…no the required kit is apparently that they should wear less, Nicky…in that they should be wearing bikini bottoms even if they’re not comfortable doing so and even though it’s not an equal kit uniform requirement applying to men also…

What they're wearing in the Photo looks OK to me, that's not revealing enough though apparently. What they're wearing in the Photo is what they were fined for

It's ridiculous and I haven't even seen them TRY to offer a valid explanation... really odd stuff.

However... I also can't leave this thread without drawing focus to the following...
