Lord of the Rings TV series moves to the UK from NZ

[Lord of the Rings: Amazon moves show to
UK from New Zealand]

[The company said the move was
part of a plan to expand its production
space and consolidate its footprint in the UK.

Amazon Studios spent $465m (£336.5m) on
the first season of the show.

With four more seasons expected to be made,
that would make it one of the most expensive
series in television history.]

That's a huge amount for a TV show.

As a Tolkien nerd I'm not especially looking forward to this. I find it bad enough when comics and books make little changes in adaption, all the changes reportedly happening here are waaaay too much. If they're not gonna respect the lore, they may as well make their own thing.

I'd still apply to be an Orc given the chance though :joker:

The Rings of Power is the most expensive show ever made, at $1bn (£832m) for five seasons - and this is fans' best guide to how it will look, sound and feel.

But what everyone really wants to know is, can it compete with Peter Jackson's beloved Lord of the Rings film trilogy, the winner of 17 Oscars, benchmark for composers, and populariser of second breakfast?

Wisely, it's not trying - instead setting the action 4,000 years before the Hobbits Frodo and Sam journeyed through Middle Earth.

This is the Second Age, where the 20 Rings of Power are forged and the evil Sauron, Lord of Mordor, rises to assault the realms' hard-won peace.

The source material is Tolkien's appendix to the Lord of the Rings books. The core question: "How far into the darkness would you go to protect the things you care about the most?" says McKay's fellow showrunner JD Payne.

It's a mix of new characters, some of them original to the show, and old favourites in younger form, like the immortal Elves Galadriel and Elrond (Morfydd Clark and Robert Aramayo), who are seen sharing a tender moment in one exclusive clip played at Comic-Con.

Another atmospheric scene showed Elrond and the dwarf King Durin IV (Owain Arthur) competing to split rocks in a high-stakes test of strength. And orcs - the blighted race that formed Sauron's army in Tolkien's books - featured in combat with the elf Arondir (Ismael Cruz Cordova) as he battles his way out of enslavement.

Amazon prime is crap.

Netflix is much better.

I found lots of the rings boring in the first place so doubt I'll watch this. I only have prime for free delivery.

It would have made more sense for Netflix to do it. Much bigger audience.

I'm a Tolkien nerd and don't even like the liberties that the LotR movies take :joker: if i could detach my brain and just watch it as a generic fantasy fan, I'd probably like it just fine.
But when every named character is wrong, and all species (including humans!) deviate from the "lore", it would just irritate me

hijaxers 01-09-2022 01:28 PM

Some reviews say its brilliant others say it naff , will probably watch and make our own minds up. Hoping its good.

If Netflix was doing it it would take them 5 Seasons to get to what should've been the Season 1 finale.

Thank god they don't have it.

Although I am unfamiliar with Amazon Prime Shows.

The impression I'm getting personally from certain YouTube videos (and I'm guessing some critics are in this camp) want to dislike Rings Of Power because of how "woke" it is.

Don't get me wrong the Show could suck (tbh most Shows do suck nowadays imo) but in fairness I agree with you on just making your own mind up because there is definitely an agenda to hate this thing from some people.

arista 02-09-2022 03:58 AM

I will watch Later
when I have a break from work.

Don't lump the "anti-woke" types with those who criticise the show for having diversity which doesn't match up with the lore Tolkien created. The Numenoreans were explicitly white, even the Black Numenoreans. Elves and Dwarves pre-date the Sun, so they wouldn't be anything but white.

Black people just existing isn't woke, so using modern casting conventions as an excuse to pre-emptively hate the show is just stupid. Their casting makes no sense when looking at Middle Earth lore, but it's the Current Year so get over it :joker:

The casting isn't the source of my scepticism, but I can understand why other Tolkien nerds would have a problem with it.
