Why is Taiwan separate from China?

[The split between the two came about
after World War Two,
when there was fighting in mainland China
between nationalist government forces
and the Chinese Communist Party.

Economically it's not in China's best interests to take Taiwan. Then again, economically its not in Russia's best interests to take Ukraine, and its highly unlikely they'll be able to hold it as an occupying force. They'll most likely force regime change and set up an "independent" puppet state. However, China is more economy-focused than Russia.
