Australia: Grease Play Cancelled, "offensive" content.

[GREASE is one of the most popular musicals of all time,
but two schools have now cancelled
their production of the show
after pupils complained about
its "offensive" content.

It was announced earlier this week
that two schools in Perth, Australia
will be bringing their production
of Grease to a close.
Presbyterian Ladies' College was
working with the all boys' Scotch College
on a rendition of the 1950s play
for next year.
Now those plans have been quashed. ]

Has the school tried telling them to "F off" and to "Get a grip of yourselves you sad, pathetic, Snowflakes"

Put the little sods in detention and make them do lines.

"I must not be a weak, pathetic human" 100 times.

What happens if they're offended by Maths, English and Science? Do the School bow down to the little brats.

Lot of offensive words in English.

Its a Fun Musical

Nothing offensive.

Grease is fun but the underlying message is obviously quite awful :joker:. That you should start drinking/smoking/being "a cool kid"/fundamentally change yourself in order to impress and be good enough for someone you fancy a bit. That's not a new thing though. I wouldn't call it "offensive" just a terrible message ... but realistically is anyone influenced by that? Adults can see that for themselves and younger people can see it with a parent or whatever who can have that conversation. I'd argue that it's actually worse to remove the catalyst for these conversations...

bitontheslide 17-11-2021 07:37 AM

one should remember its a couple of schools, who cares, honestly

To be fair some people find Science offensive, when it comes to the difference between men and women :joker:

The same goes for climate change deniers.

I don't think climate change deniers find it offensive, they just find it bat-sh!t crazy and a con. It's been about for decades and decades and just get's rebranded for every generation.

But the Science is simple - carbon dioxide is a "greenhouse gas", meaning it absorbs and re-emits heat. Fewer trees to turn CO2 into oxygen, along with more CO2 being pumped into the air ... One doesn't need a degree to know that's going to cause changes.

(I'm giving the idiots who complained about Grease all the attention and regard that they deserve)

"Parents of the Australian pupils claimed the decision to cancel the production followed outrage from a "small minority" of pupils."

I mean, I love the film but it is entirely based around a gross message, a teenage girl is mocked and looked down on, for not sleeping around and then is actively encouraged to change her entire look and personality, to please the boy she likes because he’s too embarrassed by her to admit he likes her publicly, the whole message is to change who you are, in order to appease someone else.

This story is literally just about a couple of schools not forcing their students to do something they feel uncomfortable with, something the ‘anti-woke mob’ lot should be very happy about, no?

The funny thing is, if they just changed the last 5 minutes to Danny realising he’s being an idiot and about to lose someone he really likes because he’s embarrassed by his pals teasing him, and said “Alright listen here arseholes, this is the girl I met on holiday and this is who she was when we had that great time together… I like her as she is and if you’ve got a problem wif that you can DO ONE”, apologised to her and said he doesn’t want her to change, and they go off and sit together and have a nice sandwich…

…then the whole thing would be fine and actually a good message about not caving to peer pressure.

bitontheslide 17-11-2021 08:52 AM

it was a shallow film in the first place

Precisely! All of these issues wouldn’t come up if sandy wore one of her lovely sundresses and they split a cheese and ham

LeatherTrumpet 17-11-2021 09:08 AM

Maybe they should do Home Alone

That is full of good messages

To be furrrr he did try to "change" by joining the track team about halfway through, AND at the carnival at the end he had "gone jock", and basically told his friends to not expect him to lead them anymore...

Neither of them should have had to change though! They liked each other when they met and had their "Summer Luvvin'" and were just being themselves ... the whole story is about how he acts like it was different to impress his friends ... the ending that's best for all should surely be him realising that he doesn't have to play the Big Lad. Instead it ends with her playing along!

The sad irony of course is that she ends up becoming more like Rizzo who is hammered with misogyny throughout the entire thing .

You would be calling people nazi's if they suggested punishing people for something you agreed with.

Mystic Mock 18-11-2021 03:00 AM

Tbf TV Shows such as The Big Bang Theory and Bones had similar problems yet we don't hear of any Australians kicking up a stink about them? And there's less excuses for those stories considering they're far more modern than Grease.

Btw I'm not even a big fan of Grease, but fairs fair here.

This isn't punishment. It's consequences and deterents from School children holding power over the people who are entrusted to educate them and be a guardian for them during a School day.
