“Zero stands as the far horizon beckoning us on the way horizons do in
paintings,” “It unifies the entire picture. If you look at zero you see
nothing. But if you look through it, you see the world. It’s the horizon.”

Calderyon 14-01-2022 11:43 AM

Yes, obviously.

Yes although it's a unique one - you can't divide by zero and this doesn't apply to ANY other number, no matter how far into infinity you go beyond zero in either direction. So it doesn't function like any other number in maths. It still is one though - it has to be a whole number, because if it isn't there's no integer between -1 and 1 and then maths is ****ed :joker:.

It has to be or we wouldn’t have any multiples of 10 ... or even ten it itself :)

The same as what qualifies anyone else today. Funnily enough you didn’t single out anyone else to ask them that weird question.

 I doubt there are any degree-level mathematicians kicking around, degree-level Pure Maths is a pretty obscure qualification... but anyone with A-Level (or Higher for us Scots) maths should be able to explain why 0 is (must be) an integer. If they remember of course, I know it's been a while since most of us here now were in school :worry:.

bitontheslide 28-01-2022 08:49 AM

if you have 1 orange and you eat it, you have the exact value of zero left

If you then go and buy 1 orange, you have 1. Rinse and repeat

parmnion 28-01-2022 11:19 AM

If I have no oranges, I dont have any.

Therefore, I cant count anything..

So imo, it can't be a number.

And redway, I quoted you cause you usually reply.

Why did you come at me (and me alone) asking for my qualifications, parm.? Why no-one else?

0’s a special number. That’s all there is to be said for that one. Bringing in A-Level substantiation serves no purpose because it’s too abstract for most people to understand anyhow. But the bottom line is 0’s a number.

parmnion 28-01-2022 03:30 PM

So it's not a number then......

It's a special number.

Redway 28-01-2022 03:32 PM

A number’s a number. Special or not.

And why is someone who openly confesses to banging his own blood bro. calling someone else a silly thing?
