Neighbours axed after 38 years

Popular Aussie soap has been axed after CH5 decided against renewing the contract leaving the show with no funding and it will now be axed after 38 years on air.

It famously got 20m viewers for Kylie and Jason wedding

Good ! who's been watching the last 32 yrs , so bad switched off when my last donkey died, awful tripe. Bye then :wavey::wavey:

Mystic Mock 05-02-2022 09:21 PM

It's not my type of programme, but it's sad for the fans.

Cherie 05-02-2022 09:28 PM

I used to watch years ago when the kids were young...hard to believe it was still going

LaLaLand 05-02-2022 09:31 PM

It was always on every day here I remember when I was young (early-mid 90’s) but not after.

One of the last things I remember of it is probably Helen dying suddenly sitting with her family on the sofa in the living room. That was so sad.

Or Dr Carl’s affair with his secretary! Showing my age here! :joker:

Beso 05-02-2022 10:27 PM

Camt say I've watched ot since harold bishop came back from the dead, but that a shame.

Perhaps Croatia may take it on.

[Neighbours will be axed after nearly four decades, with Channel 5

Neighbours will be axed after nearly four decades,
with Channel 5 saying it will instead
increase investment in original UK drama.

In a statement supplied to Sky News, Channel 5 said:
"Neighbours will no longer air on Channel 5 beyond
this summer.

"It has been a much-loved part of our schedule
for more than a decade, and we'd like
to thank the cast, Fremantle and all
of the production team for their fantastic
work on this iconic series.

"We'd also of course like to thank the fans
for their loyal support of Neighbours across the years.

"We recognise that there will be
disappointment about this decision,
however our current focus is on
increasing our investment in original UK drama,
which has strong appeal for our viewers."

It comes after reports that Channel 5,
Fremantle, and Australian broadcaster
Channel 10 have been trying to reach
a deal to secure the show's future

The soap has been reliant on Channel 5's funding
in recent years and it reportedly pulls in an audience of more
than one million viewers in the UK across
the two daily showings.

Neighbours, which began its depiction
of the lives of Ramsay Street residents in 1985,
is shown on a digital channel in Australia to a
much smaller audience.

But after the Summer
another channel can show it.

Viacom/Ch5
are saving Money by stopping showing it after the Summer

Hang on,

then it depends if another UK channel takes it

The oldie episodes were the best , even the acting back then was alot better . I saw a clip of a recent episode and frankly it was embarrassing.

With exception to Todie , Karl & Susan as they were the veterans of Neighbours and they always had the believability in their emotions & acting.

arista 06-02-2022 02:11 AM

Home and Away is shown on Irish TV
and other places.

The makers have stated
if another UK TV Channel takes on Neighbours
they will carry on making it.

It's always been more popular here in the UK than in Australia - they've always needed that funding (traditionally BBC, latterly Channel 5) to make the show so if they don't find another UK broadcaster (or streaming service, I suppose) that can fund the production, it can't continue.

That's also the reason Home and Away is able to survive fine; it's more the other way round. It was always a more popular soap in Australia than Neighbours with OK viewership.. in fact, I think it increased quite a bit in recent years. So basically it can continue with just the funding of the network it airs on over in Australia.

The popularity of Neighbours in the UK was really that it aired on BBC1, and that it aired at lunch and dinner time, so it sort of became family viewing of a sort :joker:. It started to decline as soon as it went to Ch5.

I haven't watched it for years but I'd still be quite sad to see it end :(

Tbf it's still getting 1.5m per episode on CH5 which is kinda in line with the decline of soaps.

The reason Ch5 got rid was because they wasn't making anything from the show at all and it was loss after loss which if your paying £21m a year you want to generate a lot if profits from ads which they don't

Yes Fremantle Australia (The Makers)
told Times Radio
that if another UK TV channel takes it over
it will save the show from being shut down.

They are hoping to get back some old stars
to go back on it.

Decline of broadcast telly in general really... same reason things like Big Brother and The X Factor can never again exist as they did back in the 2000's. You're never going to get 10 million people sat down at one time watching live TV. With internet / games / streaming services / smart phones there's just too much competition in home entertainment now for that to be viable.
