Erased and soon to be forgotten.

It does make you wonder what these cancellers real motive is?

Alf 01-03-2022 06:18 PM

In the picture is. The Quaker Oats guy, Uncle Ben, Aunt Jemima. I don't know who the American-Indian one is.

Cherie 01-03-2022 06:40 PM

Didn’t realise the Quaker guy had to go

I think that's the point of the meme, he hasn't.

Oh lol

Think Aunt Jemima’s family didn’t want her to go p, but no one cared what they thought

so are companies not allowed to re-brand their products now?

Should things always remain the same?

These are commercial companies making commercial decisions on their branding which they are all allowed to do

By erasing non-White characters from history.

These brands never needed re-branding. They were already great brands that had lasted the test of time.

bots 01-03-2022 07:27 PM

it's for the companies to decide if they need rebranding, no-one else

So then you have to question the motives of these companies. Why would they change something that is selling well by using iconic characters (in the food selling world). Those characters gave those brands an identity that everyone was familiar with and trusted.

In the companies own words

Quote:

“Over the years, the Quaker Oats Company updated the Aunt Jemima brand image in a manner intended to remove racial stereotypes that dated back to the brand origins, but it had not progressed enough to appropriately reflect the dignity, respect, and warmth that we stand for today,” a Quaker Oats spokesperson explained to Civil Eats. Earlier this year, the company announced that Pearl Milling Company would be the brand’s new name.

For generations, stereotypical imagery of Black and Indigenous people has appeared on food brands. Amid 2020’s “racial reckoning,” Uncle Ben’s, a subsidiary of Mars, Inc., announced that it would modify its name and remove the Black man on its products who was inspired by an African American cook and waiter.

“While never our intent, the picture of the man on the Uncle Ben’s packaging elicits images of servitude for some, and, in the U.S., the word ‘uncle’ was at times a pejorative title for Black men,” Denis Yarotskiy, regional president for Mars Food North America, told Civil Eats. “As a result, we committed to change our name to Ben’s Original and remove the image on our packaging to signal our ambition to create a more inclusive future.”

Yeah, like I said they've erased the non-White characters from history. Thanks for sharing that which proves me right.

Some fictional characters in life are just sacred.

I wouldn't like it if they did a new seies of Mr Bean and they erased the character played by Rowan Atkinson' out of it.

It just wouldn't be the same.

That's why Connery is still James bond.

Alf 01-03-2022 08:15 PM

When people saw Uncle Ben, it made them happy because they knew that a plate full of rice was on its way.

But James Bond hasn't been erased. My example was that Mr Bean was erased.

The Slim Reaper 01-03-2022 08:20 PM

look at this young man, so upset that there'll be no more plates of white rice for dinner.

There's even an Uncle Ben gag in an episode of Only fools and horses. That's how iconic a character he was, God bless him.

So the iconography was in no way comparable to the real lives of actual slaves?

The Slim Reaper 01-03-2022 08:55 PM

The most worrying aspect of this whole thread, is that Alf thinks Mr Bean is good entertainment.
