Toxic Sewage into UK rivers & the Sea until 2050.

Victorian Sewage System
still in use.

[The environment secretary has said the
UK government is taking urgent action
to reduce sewage discharges into rivers and the sea in England.
George Eustice unveiled a plan to curb pollution
from the "most damaging" storm overflows
by 75% by 2035, and 80% of all discharges
by 2050.
Water firms are under pressure after
1,000 sewage spills a day were recorded in 2021.
They could face legal action after admitting
possible illegal discharges.

The admission last year prompted a major
government investigation into more
than 2,200 sewage treatment works spanning
all water and sewerage companies in England.

Mr Eustice said the government was investing
£7bn until 2025 to upgrade sewage
infrastructure but admitted water bills will
rise by about £12 a year to cover costs beyond that.]

I remember seeing something on TV a while ago, can't remember where it was in the UK but the river looked filthy yet someone was swimming in it :yuk: .

Some people seem to enjoy swimming in polluted water ,for some reason.

Up most of the east coast, round the north coast of Scotland (if you can brave the cold) and also the Scottish Islands are all fine. Plus for freshwater, plenty of clean lochs :hee:.

But south coast of England is a flat NO especially south east, and several parts of the west coast are a bit risky.

Any coastline anywhere near London is pretty much on a permanent "pollution risk warning" if you look at the maps.

The companies need to be punished harshly after ONE offence !!

A thousand per day means they aren’t even bothered imho

Fifty years ago the best places to catch huge Cod off Scarborough beach were the two sewage pipes that pumped waste into the sea - about 50 metres out

And by that point you'd already consumed so much poop-cod that you'd developed a hankering :worry:

Privatisation and deregulation. .. that's the issue, nothing at all wrong with the drains.
The water companies know how to treat water to clean it, they know what safe levels of toxins are. If they fail in their role to monitor those things they are no longer competent.

Renationalise.
