Does anyone know what it was actually for?...

arista 05-05-2022 11:53 AM

The War was because of an invasion from Evil Argentina,
that leader was crazy.

Leopoldo Galtieri

arista 05-05-2022 12:00 PM

[By April 1982, Galtieri had been in office for
four months and his popularity was low.
On 2 April, on his orders,
Argentine forces invaded the Falkland Islands
,
a United Kingdom territory subject to a
long-standing Argentine claim.

Initially the invasion was popular in Argentina,
and the anti-junta demonstrations were replaced
by patriotic demonstrations in support of Galtieri.

Galtieri and most of his government
mistakenly believed the UK would not respond militarily.

the falklands war? Argentina wanted the falklands and all the sheep that went with it

arista 05-05-2022 02:24 PM

[On 14 June 1982, the Falklands' capital,
Stanley, was retaken by British forces.
Within days Galtieri was removed from power,

and he spent the next 18 months at
a well-protected country retreat
while democracy was restored to Argentina.
Along with other members of the
former junta, he was arrested in
late 1983 and charged in a military court
with human rights violations during the
Dirty War and with mismanaging the Falklands War.

Do you now get the Picture

argentina had hyper inflation at the time, they simply needed a distraction

Livia 06-05-2022 10:07 AM

My Dad fought in the Falklands. I was 2 so I really don't remember much about it but I vaguely remember going to RAF Brize Norton when he came home.

That's what I heard .. there's nothing there but sheep. Is it a tax haven of something? Is there natural gas or oil?

Why didn't anyone question it,
Why do we go to war on lies and just accept it every time?

The Scum (Galtieri)
took over our Island

Livia 06-05-2022 11:22 AM

The state terrorism by the right wing military Junta was wearing thin with the Argies, the Argentine Anti Communist death squads hunted dissidents and socialists generally. People were arrested and never seen again. Human Rights violations were widespread and the worsening economic crisis meant that Galtieri had to do something to regain public support. So he invaded the Falkland Islands.

There are not just sheep there, there is a population of over 3000 who all elected to remain British. If the Islanders themselves ever choose to change that, that'll be the time to speak to the Argentinians. Until then, they remain under the protection of the UK.

Yes there's gas & oil. This wasn't "known" at the time of the Falklands war as there hadn't been oil exploration at the time... but it would have been "expected". They found oil later in the 90's. There is now oil production in Falklands waters... they're also likely to find more once that runs out.

Everyone is free to draw their own conclusions from that I suppose...

Kizzy 10-05-2022 11:01 AM

Yeah that makes more sense since when has a conservative government cared about human rights in other countries? Or this one come to that!

bots 10-05-2022 12:10 PM

i think you need to understand the situation here at the time. the Argentinian junta were unpopular but maggie was going to lose the next election, she was so unpopular, so a war played right into her hands too, thats why she did it. It was a gamble that paid off extremely well for her politically. I even remember the next tory conference, and i kid you not, the set was shaped like a ship
