Quite surprised he's gone down this route. I read his book not long after it came out (soon after Trump won the election, think it was actually published before) and it was excellent. It wasn't a particularly political book but did focus a lot on the values and the hardships of the white working class which explained why so many of them were drawn to Trump. At that time Vance wasn't a Trump supporter himself but that's obviously changed now
