Galaxies and planets

In the Galaxy (milky way)that we are in there are around 100,000,000,000 (100 Billion) planets and the same amount of stars

and in the known universe there are 200,000,000,000 galaxies

try and work dat oot:shocked:

So think about it like this. You are familiar with our solar system, where there
are just eight planets and one star.

Our solar system alone is billion miles wide. If you got on a jet and flew at 600 miles per hour across the solar
system, it would take roughly 1,000 years.

Our solar system is just one of 100 billion of star systems in the Milky Way galaxy.

And the Milky Way galaxy is just one of 200 billion of galaxies in the universe.

yeah, by definition, our understanding of anything has to be infinitesimally small and yet we think we are so clever

The maths are so incomprehensible that, apparently, it makes it not just likely that there are aliens, but in fact likely that there are aliens who are human-like. If the theory (which is in fact likely) that the universe is just the limits of our observations and there are in fact probably hundreds of billions of universes ... it then makes it likely that by sheer coincidence there will be other entities living our exact lives.

Tis indeed mind blowing stuff.

This is all without going into dimensions... we're 4-dimensional beings (length, breadth, height, time) but we know there are at least 5 dimensions, and theories that there are in fact nine dimensions. We can sort of conceptualise 5 and have weird theories about 6. Beyond that, the theory goes, you wouldn't even be able to imagine what is entailed in these dimensions, unless you're "the one below". i.e. we fully understand and can observe 4 dimensions and can conceptualise 5. A 6th-dimesional being would be able to fully understand and observe 6 dimensions (their own and all the ones lower) and conceptualise a 7th. etc.

But the basics are, it's science we not only don't know about, but would be physically incapable of comprehending.

And people seek to explain existence in terms of anthropomorphised deities in the sky. D:

for all we know, there may be an advanced alien race that are seeding planets here there and everywhere and we are just one of them. Without the big picture we are basically clueless

and the wee balls of fluff and hair that you can get under a bed if you have a wooden floor and essentially small galaxies

There are theories that there might actually be all sorts of life everywhere - right on our "galactic doorstep" - but if there are races sufficiently advanced that don't want us to know, we could never possibly know. The theory basically being that they find and observe "fledgling" planets and then from the point they develop radio communication (start being able to "listen" to the sky in other words) ... they use some advanced tech to simply block all incoming "chatter". We observe the stars and can learn about them but never see life - but maybe it's right there, just deliberately hidden from planets that aren't "ready" and may never be ready? The "bubble" blocking us from seeing could be lightyears away sort of like a test I guess - if you become advanced enough to be able to travel out of your bubble, you get to know the truth. Until then, the galaxy appears to be "quiet" in terms of intelligent life.

Of course it could just be that our tech levels are currently so primitive that we can't even see our next door neighbours yet, no blocking required :joker:. Maybe they look at us like "lol cute, don't think they're gonna make it though :("
