American Mid Term Elections

This should have it's own thread....

The United States will hold its midterm elections on 8 November 2022. They will shape the second half of Joe Biden’s term as president and, ultimately, the country.

Members of the House of Representatives run for re-election every two years, so all 435 House seats are up for election. Thirty-five Senate seats are, too (senators hold their positions for six years). There are also numerous gubernatorial election and local elections, too.

At the moment, the Democrats control the House: they hold 221 seats to the Republicans’ 208. (Six seats are vacant.) The Senate is equally split, with 50 members from each party. Kamala Harris, the vice-president, has a tiebreaker vote so the Democrats are nominally in control.

If Democrats lose the House, they will find it even more difficult to pass legislation than they do now. And they’re having a hard time — on voting rights, on climate change, on reproductive rights and on gun control — already. The Biden agenda will be more stalled than it already is.

Trump is in a lot of trouble. Surprised that for such a news consumer, Arista hasn't made a Jan 6th hearings thread for some reason

Its going on too long.
No achieving a conclusion.

Meanwhile, the November Mid Term Elections
become a reflection of Biden's lack of power.

Is he though? Even the most bouncy of Kangaroo Courts would find themselves hard-pressed to really tie Trump directly to the Jan6 riot. The most you could say is a bunch of idiots chose to interpret his words as a direct instruction. Even if he was involved more than it appears, of which I certainly wouldn't discount the possibility, there's not enough actual evidence (that I know of) to put him in real trouble.

Have you watched any of the hearings? Trumps closest advisors have all basically been saying that it was planned well in advance.

He'll probably get away with it because rich people always do, but it's gone well beyond trying to prosecute free speech through interpretation as you suggest.

Oops :joker: last I heard it was all just reaching, the only real "evidence" was the tweets.

But if both of you say basically the same thing, maybe there is something there

The hearings have been great entertainment value all round, like Josh Hawley egging on the rabble, then they showed CCTV of him legging it

The White House says President Joe Biden did not mean to offend workers in the coal industry after he called for coal plants across the US to be shuttered.

At an event in California on Friday, Biden said: "We’re going to be shutting these plants down all across America and having wind and solar also providing tax credit to help families buy energy-efficient appliances."

The statement drew sharp criticism from fellow Democrat and West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin, who said Biden's remarks were "outrageous and divorced from reality."

“Comments like these are the reason the American people are losing trust in President Biden," Manchin said.

In a statement on Saturday, White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden's remarks "have been twisted to suggest a meaning that was not intended".

“President Biden knows that the men and women of coal country built this nation: they powered its steel mills and factories, kept its homes and schools and offices warm,” Jean-Pierre said.

"He regrets it if anyone hearing these remarks took offense."

He still meant what he said

Election day has arrived. Currently, the republicans are set to take control of the house and on the balance of probabilities, likely to control the senate too. This will have a profound impact on the country. It will basically kill the Biden presidency stone dead. Abortion rights will bite the dust permanently, green energy will be kicked in to touch. Healthcare and pension will nose dive, and those are just the tip of the iceberg

Over in Pennsylvania, Doug Mastriano is one of the best examples of a candidate backed by a new religious right that some claim are driven by the idea of Christian Nationalism.

He's a Pennsylvania senator running for governor who’s championed the false claims that the 2020 election was stolen. For the midterms, he’s campaigning as a Christian warrior fighting for conservative Christian values.

https://ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experi...e62474cca4.jpg

He casts himself and his followers as God's chosen people who must take back the country. Mastriano is supported by a revivalist movement of self-proclaimed prophets and apostles.

One of them, Julie Green, says God gave her a prophecy that this was Mastriano’s time and that he should move forward with the plan he’d been given for the "great steal" to be overturned.

At a campaign event, she told me God wanted Mastriano to save Pennsylvania from its unjust laws. Several voters I met there said they believed Mastriano had been appointed by God.
