Souness under attack from the Lionesses

Apparently some of the England women’s team have taken to Twitter and the like to criticise/ castigate Graeme Souness for referring to yesterday’s Spurs v Chelsea match as a throwback where we got our game back .. “ it was a proper man’s game that “

The world has gone crazy

I’m thinking that It may work against the women’s ‘drive forward’ as well ... as many will side with Souness

:::

Graeme Souness alluded to football as a "man's game" after a fiery London derby between rivals Chelsea and Tottenham. Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte squared off more than once, resulting in both of them receiving a red card and a clash between coaching staff and players at full-time.

Sky Sports pundit Souness said: "It's a mans game all of a sudden again." At the time he was sat next to former England international Karen Carney who looked a bit perplexed following the comment.

:::

Women's football player Bethany England was among a number of observers who slammed Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness following comments he made during the broadcaster's coverage of Chelsea vs Tottenham in the Premier League on Sunday.

Souness made the reference more than once, also referring to watching a game with "men at it". On social media, England's Bethany England tweeted: “'It’s a man’s game', 'Men at it' Get in the bin. What a disgraceful thing to say after the summer this country has just seen."

Its sad that rather than try and understand what he meant they just go on twitter and make themselves look stupid

Cherie 15-08-2022 09:33 AM

It's hard to believe he didn't know what he was saying, he went on about Men and a Mans game more than once, you could forgive him for thinking out loud once but sat beside an ex female football player, in a year that women have brought football 'home', his words were certainly a little dinasaurish in my view

Although he was talking specifically about that game which was a man’s game featuring JUST men

He didn’t say it carelessly after one of the Lionesses’s matches

He was referring to the way the modern "mens" game has gone it was nothing to do with women's football.

As in back 20 years ago the tackles were meatier and there was more passion (and the refs let the game flow more.

He didn't address Karen once from the footage I saw, that was telling enough  He had plenty to say to Jamie Carragher, also he was man spreading, while Jamie was perched politely with legs together :hee:

smudgie 15-08-2022 09:46 AM

Hmmm, the way the managers went on it was more thuggish than manly..whatever bloody manly is.

I have no idea why she was there tbh other than a box ticking exercise.

Yeah definitely intentional and very crass imo

I see there's a Karen involved in this discussion. Surprise, Surprise.

Souness meeting Karen

Alf 15-08-2022 09:57 AM

It's not fair that Souness mentions men alongside football. It's not like we've had woman and football rammed in our faces for the past few years.

Alf 15-08-2022 10:04 AM

If women arne't fighting with the Trans community then they're fighting with men.

They'll have no allies left soon.

MTVN 15-08-2022 10:19 AM

The most generous interpretation of this is that he's pretty thick for not realising how it would come across. As soon as he said it everyone was saying how he'd get in trouble for the comments so the reaction was obvious

bots 15-08-2022 10:22 AM

i thought he was doing it as a wind up hoping the lady would lose her cool. He obviously knew what he was saying because he repeated it about 4 times

One of the top comments from the DT article:

More 'woke' drivel. It's a 'man's game' is obviously being used idiomatically, in this
context, to describe men's football and specifically contrasting the mandate this season
for the refs to allow more physical contact, as opposed to recent seasons. A rather more
pertinent question might be why is Karen Carney being employed as a pundit for men's
football, when she has no experience of it?

That's stupid statement to make, she's a football player commenting on a football match. There were male pundits on for the Women's Euro final, what's the issue?

I was more offended by Sky having Karen Carney as a pundit. Pundits should
ideally have played in the fixture on which they're commenting. At the very
least they should have played at the same level. Karen Carney ticks neither of
these boxes and has been chosen solely because she's a woman. The very
definition of sexism.

male or female, the pundits usually talk complete bollocks, so it really doesn't make any difference

Interesting how the defence has gone from "that isn't what he meant" to still attacking women anyway.
