Labour MP Rupa Huq has been suspended from the parliamentary party pending an investigation after she called the chancellor "superficially" black.

Speaking about Kwasi Kwarteng at a party conference fringe event, Ms Huq also said: "If you hear him on the Today programme, you wouldn't know he's black."

Tory Party chair Jake Berry called her comments racist and disgusting.

Deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner said the remarks were "unacceptable".

Speaking to the BBC's Politics Live programme, she said Ms Huq should apologise, while the party's foreign affairs spokesman David Lammy described the remarks as "unfortunate" adding: "I wouldn't have made them myself."

Labour a viable alternative?

joeysteele 27-09-2022 03:19 PM

Absolutely right.

What on earth was she thinking to even make such a ridiculous comment.
Definitely the right decision.

No place for this nonsense.

shocking racism from labour

Oliver_W 27-09-2022 03:43 PM

So he's not black enough? For some people, "diversity" is only skin deep. As soon as they act in a way they're not supposed to, their Black Card is revoked. Because God forbid people should be individuals.

It's like racists who refer to people like Kanye West as "Uncle Toms"

Really stupid comment from her.
It shouldn't be, mustn't be and will not be tolerated by Labour.
No way.

Should have apologised right away
Still pleased am I with the rapid action.

She really should have known better, she'd be one of the first to call others out on an issue like this

Jake Berry Von MP, was 100% right to highlight this too.
Well done to him.

See that's so bloody racist to automatically assume something about someone based on their political, and any other, beliefs.

It's like that radio host woman a few years back assuming her well educated/well spoken guest was white purely because of his education and how he spoke. Telling him he has white privilege by assumption. It's racism by those claiming to be anti racist.

the problem is that her apology means nothing because she meant what she said, she didn't speak in error. She should be put on some racial retraining program or something

joeysteele 27-09-2022 04:37 PM

They weren't just ill judged Rupa Huq, they were offensively WRONG.

That’s what all those politicians said when during the expenses scandal !!

They were all allowed to pay all the money back that they’d stolen .. and all was forgotten… they all kept their positions as well ..

The right action was taken in a swift manner. No trying to rewrite the rules like the tories do when they get caught, so that's all you can ask.

We never hated Jews at all LT.
Never at all.

Plus a fully outside independent inquiry found that Labour was not so.
An inquiry as a Labour member I was pleased took place.
None of the internal party investigation nonsense.

Plus yes, they found there were issues, which needed addressing and they have been under Starmer thankfully.
However no way was it so, or is, or ever will be, that Labour hated Jews.
Not at all.

Some on here even indicated Labour was riddled with antisemitism.
That independent full and very lengthy independent inquiry found that NOT to be so.
The demands and suggestions on dealing with the inquiry's conclusions were accepted in full and implemented.

Oh I had enough of the antisemitic stuff before on here slim.
I was once accused of being like a racist saying they had black friends, when I stated I had Jewish friends since my childhood.

It's still something that gets my back up.

I've fought against antisemitism from the first time I learned what it was.
I wouldn't be in or support any party that was.

I get it, but it's not a discussion that's being looked for, it's to bait/troll.

He did, after POCKETS of it were found by that full independent inquiry.

Not the Party as you inferred.

I'll take slims advice and leave you to it.
No.point in my saying more on it and be wasting my time.
