Do you like a bet?

Do you bet?

I bet on horse races mainly, the Derby and the Grand National. Will also have the occasional flutter on various things.

I grew up with people who like a bet, my brother and my late best friend are/were gambling addicts. So I was always around that scene. I'm quite easy though, It's not a big deal to me. I used to like a Saturday football bet but I never won very much so I don't do it as often these days.

we used to have the Pools man come round each week

remember him?

Ah yes my dad used to do the pools. He'd let me have a go as well, pick teams etc.

Yes, my dad used to do that when I was a kid. The pools coupon and spot the ball.

Coupon man used to come every Thursday night.

Only on slots and never more than a tenner. I have actually won quite a lot so well happy :cheer2:

last bet i did was trump to win the election in 2016, so, the bookies don't make their money from me

MTVN 04-01-2023 07:44 AM

They brought back the Football Pools game in WHSmith stores for about a year but no one ever played it and it got swiftly canned. The odds on it are terrible in honesty

I don't bother with betting much as I've never been any good at it, only times I will now are for golf majors or big horse races

user104658 04-01-2023 11:36 AM

Mug's game. If you genuinely enjoy it then consider it paying for a recreational activity - over the long term no one makes any money.

I similarly only bet on "novelties" and one off events. I did have money on Trump, and there was the infamous £10 at 33/1 on Helen Wood :flutter:. I've won a bit on a few Big Brother seasons and a couple of X Factor seasons. It's only worth it if you can get good odds on an upcoming "dark horse" (my best X factor win was Little Mix, for example, who were way out at 8/1 half way through the live shows). No point betting on an odds on favourite.

Although I lumped onto Gary Bussey BB at 8/13 :umm2:. I considered that one basically free money though, he was never going to lose.

But yeah. MUG'S GAME! But adds a bit of excitement on reality telly finale nights :joker:.

Niamh. 04-01-2023 11:43 AM

Nah, not really

Livia 04-01-2023 12:16 PM

No, I don't bet. I mean, I do the lottery every once in a while and have taken part in sweepstakes... but I don't really bet on sports. It worries me that every second advert on TV is a gambling ad... Bingo, slots... Accas... they're trying to normalise betting, suggesting that you can't really enjoy the match without having some money on it.

Addition to gambling is serious and when they try to cover their arse with ridiculous adverts, like "gamble responsibly..." and "when it stops being fun, stop". It's like saying to an alcoholic, don't get drunk, just have a couple.

Josy 17-01-2023 09:58 AM

Only lottery and the Irish lottery on a Saturday.

It's dangerous if you have an addictive personality, lots of people have gambling addictions

rusticgal 17-01-2023 10:08 AM

I do the Lottery now and again...and the Grand National.

Not only that, it's like a bar manager saying to an alcoholic "don't get drunk, just have a couple" and then taking all of the bar staff in a room in the back for a hushed chat on how to get away with making sure he actually still drinks as much as ever. Grim.

I won £80 from a £2 bet yesterday.

That's how they get'ya Parmy!

I once went into a bookies in Glasgow with a pal on a night out (when I worked in one so extra-specially disliked being in them) and he was hammering £20 notes into the roulette... I was getting bored so I stuck £5 in the machine next to him and did 5 spins on "Rainbow Riches" ... ... won the £250 silver pot .

I can see how things like that get people hooked on these games. But when you've watched people play them all day every day for years, you know it's just dumb luck and wins like that are rare!
