Being in a position of power to do this for long enough to do it 24 times is absolutely insane... there's no way that people didn't know it was happening. And I mean people in a position to do something about it. There will at the very least have been rumours.

You have to suspect that they either weren't that bothered, which would suggest major issues with a culture of police officers abusing positions of power, or perhaps more likely that there's some sort of red tape in place that means people's hands are tied until there's a formal investigation.

Probably a mixture of that with a side of being scared to speak up as well

That will definitely be the case with colleagues at the same sort of level, but for it to have gone on so long I'm just very skeptical that people senior to him hadn't already heard rumours. Maybe not of the full extent but to have committed such serious offenses, there's just no way he wasn't also openly inappropriate in "smaller" ways.

i'm sure they would have known about it too. Personally, i think the whole of the met needs to be re-vetted, people just don't trust them

Just look at the "nicknames" other officers had for Sarah Everard's killer.

Mystic Mock 16-01-2023 04:47 PM

24 rapes is definitely a higher number than I was expecting.

But I agree with SB, there must've been people that knew what he was like.

Agree with this.

Twenty four is an astonishing number. It makes him one of the most prolific serial rapists in UK history. No way no body knew about it.

bots 16-01-2023 05:36 PM

a rapist will have shown very unpleasant character traits that would be impossible to hide day in day out in a work environment. Nobody but the police should be better at spotting it

GiRTh 16-01-2023 05:39 PM

Surely someone needs quite a bit of help to rape 24 women. Even though he was a copper, snatching up 24 women from the street is virtually impossible without help. Who helped him commit these crimes.

He had loads of allegations against him spanning two years but the vetting system didn’t pick them up and promoted him.

It’s basically hiding in plain site

It's against 12 women but yeah the point remains. It's insane that he got away with offending on this scale for this amount of time

Hopefully this case will be a watershed in how the police prevent this happening in future

The Met Police is investigating 1,000 sexual and domestic abuse claims involving about 800 of its officers, the commissioner has said.

It comes after PC David Carrick pleaded guilty to 49 offences, including dozens of rapes.

Sir Mark Rowley announced all 45,000 Met officers and staff would be rechecked for previously missed offending.

He also apologised to Carrick's victims for the force's failings.

"We have failed. And I'm sorry. He should not have been a police officer," he said.

Sir Mark said: "This man abused women in the most disgusting manner. It is sickening. We've let women and girls down, and indeed we've let Londoners down. The women who suffered and survived this violence have been unimaginably brave and courageous in coming forward.

"I do understand also that this will lead to some women across London questioning whether they can trust the Met to keep them safe.

"We haven't applied the same sense of ruthlessness to guarding our own integrity that we routinely apply to confronting criminals."

Carrick, who worked for the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command, committed the offences against 12 women across two decades.
