From October 2023 it will also apply to UK General elections.

This new law was passed very quietly :suspect:

It won't affect me as I've my passport and driving licence, +.

However I am furious this has been passed into law.
Absolutely NO need for it at all.

What about postal votes???
I often wonder how many actually possibly fill in their own postal vote.

An old Lady was telling me her bus pass photo doesn't look much like her now, she had it taken 24 years ago to get it.
It's renewed with that same photo, she's never been told to go and have the photo updated.

What a shambles of a government to bring this in.
Then again where is Labour saying they'd reverse it though.
They certainly should say they will.

Absolutely ridiculous.
Soldiers who fought in the last war for our rights and freedoms as well as defending the Country.
Must be turning in their graves at this.

Yes Postal Votes as before Joey

[Make sure you're registered
To vote in any election in the UK,
you must be registered to vote.

If you know that you won’t be able to get
to the polling station on polling day,
you can vote by post.
You can apply for postal vote because you’re away
on holiday or because your work schedule
means you can't get to polling station.
You can also choose to vote by
post simply because it would be
more convenient for you.

You will be a sent a postal vote ballot
pack before the election.
Find out more about how to vote by post.]

I don't want a postal vote but it's good you've printed that for anyone who might

Where's the photo ID for postal votes and how do they KNOW the postal voter has actually entered the cross themselves???
That it hasn't been done by another family member, neighbour or other.

Then I'm awaiting the announcement that the government will be providing free valid photo ID; every state in the USA which mandates photo ID provides it after all.

bots 22-01-2023 03:26 PM

i always thought it was a bit dodgy to just turn up with a voting card, however, what they are doing is making sure everyone has an ID card of one form or another and is therefore "in the system" (excluding illegal immigrants of course)

Then it shouldn't be a compulsory part of voting

Plastic Card with your posted Photo
will cost money

Not Free
Times are hard

From the link above, it says you have to apply for a certificate if you don't have a photo ID. It's free but you have to provide a photo of yourself.

I have a Citizencard and a driver's licence.

James 22-01-2023 04:00 PM

Or apply for a postal vote.

They know fine well that Tories are statistically far more likely to already have photo ID.

To be fair you need photo ID to get a job or claim benefits, so what's the problem?

joeysteele 22-01-2023 05:55 PM

I just think it's unnecessary and wrong.

There's no evidence of strong fraud in voting.
In fact it would seem there's hardly any at all.

I hope it backfires on this lot for even thinking about bringing it in never mind doing so.

bots 22-01-2023 06:03 PM

it's a standard tactic to try and get the edge on a vote. It's been used across the world

No not everyone has photo ID .

Liam- 22-01-2023 07:10 PM

The tories trying their best to make it harder to vote when they know they’re gonna get decimated in the next bunch of elections? I am shocked

arista 01-02-2023 10:34 AM

Only 10,000 have applied for photo/ID
the Guardian has reported today.
